MS is believed to be caused by a mix of genetic and environmental factors. In people with MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks myelin — the protective layer around nerves — disrupting communication between the brain and body.

Researchers still don’t know the exact trigger, but key risk factors include:
🧬 Genetics
☀️ Low vitamin D / low sunlight exposure
🦠 Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)
🚬 Smoking
⚖️ Childhood or adolescent obesity

MS is not directly hereditary, and having certain genes only increases risk — it doesn’t guarantee someone will develop the condition. Scientists continue researching the causes to improve prevention and treatment. 💙

Meet ambassador Tiffany 💙

Originally from Mexico and now based in Germany, Tiffany is one of our incredible The May 50K ambassadors this year 🙌

Through her PhD, Tiffany helps organise a clinical trial focused on sport and MS — and when a close friend was diagnosed, her connection to the cause became even more personal.

This is her second year taking on the May 50K, and she’s going even bigger with her fundraising 💪 Whether it’s running, cycling or swimming, she’s all about moving with purpose.

✨ “Sport has the unique capacity to empower people and bring them together… The best part is raising awareness and supporting the MS community.”

Her advice?
👉 Do a little every day — it adds up
👉 Start sharing your fundraising early
👉 Reach out to friends & family directly

And most importantly: have fun while you move! 🏃‍♀️

Let’s cheer Tiffany on as she makes every KM count 💙

Where do The May 50K funds go? 💸

In the UK, 70% of the donations from The May 50K go towards pioneering, MS Society UK funded, research projects. Over the past few years, the donations have gone towards the Stop MS Appeal. At the close of the 10-year long appeal in 2025, they successfully raised £101.9 million and have been able to build an entirely new clinical trials network for progressive MS. Something that simply didn’t exist before. Their vision is a world free from the effects of MS and their mission is to enable everyone affected by MS to live life to their full potential.

🌟 Meet Olivia Kirwan from Dublin, Ireland! 🌟

18 years since her MS diagnosis - Olivia is stepping up once again for The May 50K. Why? Because she can. Because she wants to push herself past her limits and show others that challenges are meant to be faced head-on. 💪

Last year, her biggest win was simply getting outdoors, soaking in the fresh air, and adjusting when needed. Some days were tougher, but she found a way to keep going. 🏃‍♀️

And this year? She’s taking fundraising into her own hands, making it easier for others to support her and the cause. 💙

🧠 Understanding the different types of MS

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) affects everyone differently, but there are 3 main types:

✨ Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS)
The most common type. People experience relapses (new or worsening symptoms) followed by periods of recovery or remission.

✨ Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS)
Over time, some people with RRMS transition to SPMS, where symptoms gradually worsen with fewer clear relapses or remissions.

✨ Primary Progressive MS (PPMS)
Symptoms steadily worsen from the beginning without distinct relapses. Around 10–15% of people are diagnosed with this type.

🩺 Another early stage called Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS) can be the first neurological episode linked to MS, but not everyone with CIS develops MS.

Every MS journey is unique, and symptoms and progression can vary greatly from person to person. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference.
