Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace have joined forces to rank political parties’ manifestos ahead of polling day on 4 July. After scrutinising the details, Labour scores 4-times higher than the Conservatives, but it’s the Greens and Liberal Democrats that claim first and second place respectively.

The Green Party leads the pack with a whopping 39 out of a possible 40 points, followed by the Liberal Democrats on 31.5. Between Labour and the Conservatives there’s no contest: Labour scored a respectable but not exceptional 20.5, while the Conservatives are miles off in last place with a shocking 5 points.

The 2024 election manifestos of Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party have been ranked against 40 key policies. Find out which party comes out on top.

We’ve carried out a rapid assessment of where the Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green parties stand right now on climate, energy, nature and the environment, and where they’re strongest and weakest. We’ve scored them out of 10 on the 10 biggest green challenges for the next government, and we’ll be using this to encourage the parties to strengthen the areas where policy is weak or lacking, and even to firm up areas where they’re currently strong.

Urgent climate and nature action is needed from the next government. With an election date set, campaigner Connor Schwartz and policy expert Mike Childs assess how the parties’ policies are shaping up.

Hundreds of the world’s leading climate scientists expect global temperatures to rise to at least 2.5C above preindustrial levels this century, blasting past internationally agreed targets and causing catastrophic consequences for humanity and the planet.

Almost 80% of the respondents, all from the authoritative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), foresee at least 2.5C of global heating, while almost half anticipate at least 3C.

The IPCC’s reports are the gold standard assessments of climate change, approved by all governments and produced by experts in physical and social sciences. The results show that many of the most knowledgeable people on the planet expect climate havoc to unfold in the coming decades.

The experts were clear on why the world is failing to tackle the climate crisis. A lack of political will was cited by almost three-quarters of the respondents, while 60% also blamed vested corporate interests, such as the fossil fuel industry.

The UK government’s climate action plan is unlawful, the high court has ruled, as there is not enough evidence that there are sufficient policies in place to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The energy secretary, Claire Coutinho, will now be expected to draw up a revised plan within 12 months. This must ensure that the UK achieves its legally binding carbon budgets and its pledge to cut emissions by more than two-thirds by 2030, both of which the government is off track to meet.

The environmental charities Friends of the Earth and ClientEarth took joint legal action with the Good Law Project against the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) over its decision to approve the carbon budget delivery plan (CBDP) in March 2023.

Please take 2 minutes to contact London's candidates now. Make sure your next mayor puts climate and community at the heart of their decision-making.

This May, Londoners will be voting for our next regional mayor, along with almost half of England. Through devolution our mayors have gained the power to take bold action on the climate and nature emergencies. In this critical decade for our planet, it’s vital we have mayors willing and ready to s...

"The water companies’ business strategy has worked as follows: load themselves with debt to finance dividend payouts; load the future with costs as they fail to build the infrastructure – such as new reservoirs and pipes – required to meet our growing needs; and load the rivers with excrement to avoid the expense of upgrading their plants.

Since the industry was privatised in 1989, the companies have borrowed £64bn. Where has it gone? Down their only leak-free pipeline: the one that leads into shareholders’ pockets. During this period, £78bn has been paid in dividends."

Soiled seas and huge dividends: where has the ÂŁ64bn borrowed by firms since privatisation gone, asks Guardian columnist George Monbiot
