Brixton’s history is packed with landmark moments that have shaped its identity.

From groundbreaking innovation to cultural movements that still influence the city today.

These five facts highlight why Brixton remains one of the UK’s most influential and culturally powerful neighbourhoods.

⚡ Electric Avenue wasn’t just a catchy song. In the 1890s it became the first market street in London to be fully lit by electricity and would later go on to inspire Eddy Grant on a late night walk through Brixton.

🌍 The arrival of the Windrush Generation in 1948 transformed Brixton into a centre of Caribbean culture, activism, and creativity. Their food, music, community organising and political leadership shaped the Brixton we know today.

🛍️ Brixton Market has been a trading hotspot for over a century. What began as 1920s indoor arcades evolved into today’s multicultural food scene, where global flavours, independent traders and heritage businesses thrive side by side.

🏠 During the 1970s squatting movement, residents reclaimed empty buildings to create community centres, art spaces and political organising rooms. This era cemented Brixton’s reputation for resistance, creativity and grassroots power.

🎤 Brixton has produced some of Britain’s most iconic artists, including Skin from Skunk Anansie. The artistic legacy remains woven into Brixton’s cultural identity, inspiring generations of musicians and performers.
