Because it's time!

One of the best things about the work we do is that we get to be inspired by the children we work with. Another great thing is that we get to work talented, generous people who are willing to give a little of themselves to make a change.

We have had so much fun with Book Box Library Club. The library is stocked with fantastic books in both Yoruba and English. Where the children needed different books that we couldn’t find, they inspired us to create them. Far from being an obstacle this has been one of the most rewarding and fun things to do.

With the help of amazing volunteers and creatives the children who use Book Box Library Club are getting exactly the right books for them. And there is so much more to come.

Receiving the right book, at the right level, at the right time is incredibly important to children during their early reading journeys. Give them a book that is too hard and they can get intimidated, which is no fun and can turn them off reading. Give children a book that is too easy and they can get bored and distracted. Give them the right book at the right time, which is relatable and fun and you have the best chance of discovering the lifelong reader within.

Learning to read is a huge undertaking, especially when you are learning English and it is not your mother tongue. It takes time, commitment, and continuous practice. Book Box Library Club is not a short-term programme. We become part of the fabric of the schools we work in, visiting regularly, monitoring progress, and growing with our young members.

Apart from the amazing children who trust us with their time and their attention, the biggest thank you has to go to our two tireless Book Box Library Club facilitators.

John Okeleye is our Christianna Foundation Project Manager and he is the glue that holds everything together. Mr Kolawole Olasupo is our on staff teacher and was a Head Teacher in the community of Ona-Ara for many years. Me Olasupo’s local experience and relationships are invaluable to us as we strive to fulfil our values of being a community-led partnership.

A HUGE thank you to both of your for your hard work and achievements in 2021.

With Christmas around the corner and the year fast coming to an end, it is a good time to reflect on the achievements of the past year and thank all those that made them possible.

Thank you to all our supporters, volunteers and the team at Christianna Foundation.
