On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we ask everyone to play their part: learn the signs of abuse, start conversations, and think about the conditions under which you and your family want to grow old.

Abuse is often hidden and can involve physical, psychological, sexual and economic harm, neglect, coercive control and exploitation.. Age UK reports that data shows that one in twenty people aged 60-74 and one in thirty people aged 75 and over experienced domestic abuse in 2025.

Together, we can build a future where every older person can age safely and with dignity. If you need support or are concerned about someone else, it’s important to seek help, you can contact:

Age UK East London recently hosted Local Election hustings events in Hackney & Newham, bringing together candidates and community members to discuss the issues that matter most to older people.

Covering topics such as healthcare, housing, the cost of living and community support, the discussions created an important platform for local people to share their experiences—ensuring underrepresented voices are part of the conversation.

We look forward to working with East London's elected mayors and all of our council and community colleagues to make sure these issues remain at the forefront and older people's voices continue to be heard.

A huge thank you to our Staywell partners in Newham, and our partners at the Marie Lloyd Centre in Hackney for their collaboration and support in organising these events.

📢 We’re Hiring: Head of Community Services

We are looking for a motivated and compassionate leader to guide our Community Services across Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham. You’ll oversee a wide range of programmes that help older people stay active, connected, and independent.

We are looking for people who understand the community we serve and are therefore specifically looking for applicants who live in and/or have strong connections with Hackney, Tower Hamlets or Newham. Additionally, we are determined to increase the diversity of our senior team in line with our organisational EDI Objectives. For this reason, we are actively seeking candidates from the Global Majority (all non-white ethnic groups, including Black, Asian, and other groups previously labelled as "ethnic minorities" or ‘BAME’).

If you’re passionate about championing older people and helping shape services that truly make a difference, we’d love to hear from you.

Applications closes at 11.59pm 12th May.
