Dickens and Bruce Castle:

📚The Father of Christmas Ghost Stories himself, Charles Dickens, would have known of Bruce Castle as the ancestral home of his good friend Chauncey Hare Townsend. He even visited Bruce Castle when it was a school run by the Hill family; Dickens was a great admirer of its progressive outlook on education, and his illustrator (Hablot Knight Brown, known by the pen-name Phiz), sent his sons to Bruce Castle School. Dickens' close friend, William Hone, also lived just across the grounds of Bruce Castle, so the iconic author was closely familiar with this part of Tottenham.

👻Who knows if the school boys at Bruce Castle would have huddled in their dormitories (now our archive stores), reading about the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future…

NB.. There are new developments regarding the 2022 planning application concerning the Drapers Almshouses on Bruce Grove. ie a Planning Sub Committee meeting on 6th November 2025.

All of the new units would be for private sale because, according to the plans, a financial viability assessment shows the scheme “is unable to support provision of any affordable housing”.

The almshouses are situated within Bruce Castle Conservation Area, which is home to some of Haringey borough’s oldest buildings. On the site itself, the almshouses, chapel and lodge/gatehouse have Grade 2-listed status. To the east of the site, Tottenham Magistrates Court is also Grade 2-listed, and on the opposite side of Lordship Lane is the Grade 1 listed Bruce Castle.

A great turn out at Bruce Castle yesterday, for October's 'Munch & Listen' talk given by Friend of Bruce Castle, and local historian Victorine Martineau.

Herself a descendent of Huguenots, Victorine told us of Tottenham's Huguenot Heritage, including the story of Tottenham’s Philip De la Haize (1718 – 1769), son of Huguenots and a good friend of James and Henrietta Townsend, Lord and Lady of the Manor at Bruce Castle.

This is the 30th year of the Friends of Bruce Castle.
Our Annual General Meeting is at 2pm on SUNDAY 26th OCTOBER in Bruce Castle Museum.

If you would like to become a member of the Friends, we will be taking applications on the day.

We are always looking for new members who can support the Museum, by volunteering at events, offering technical support, fundraising etc.

If you cannot attend but would like to become a member please pm for more details.

🕯Visit the Candlelit Castle and be transported back to the Victorian age of ghost stories by costumed guides. They will share the sinister secrets and eerie experiences hidden inside the walls of one of London’s most haunted buildings.

🍷All tickets will include your choice of twilight tipple: either a glass of wine or a warming hot chocolate.

🎃Each tour will run for an hour, with time afterwards to enjoy your refreshment. Costumes are very welcome, but not mandatory!

🚨These tours are strictly for adults 18 and over only.
