It is with our deepest sorrow that we announce the death of our dear friend and colleague, Marino Varricchio, who worked as a Senior Policy Officer at the Carbon Capture and Storage Association.

Marino joined us towards the end of last year and quickly established himself as a highly credible, very knowledgeable and well-respected member of our team. He was passionate and dedicated to his work and wanted success for the industry.

Marino brought new ideas, ways of doing things, a wealth of experience and a real thirst for knowledge. He had successfully built up an excellent reputation amongst colleagues, our members and stakeholders. His drive and enthusiasm inspired those around him.

And most importantly, Marino was a popular and valued member of our team. He treated colleagues with kindness and respect.

He will be greatly missed as a friend, colleague and valued ambassador and thought leader for our sector.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time.

The family sincerely thanks all those who share in their grief and kindly requests that visits be omitted.

🇪🇺📢 Welcome to the CCSA Europe Market Study Thursday! Every Thursday at 14:00 CET, we will share one key insight of our recently published study - developed in collaboration with Deloitte.

🗺️ Last week, we outlined the CCUS risk landscape in Europe and offered practical mitigation tools to unlock CCUS investment. Today, we present a phased policy roadmap to move from first-of-a-kind projects to a mature, market-driven CCUS ecosystem.

🏭 To scale effectively, Europe needs a framework that reduces risks and supports coordinated development across capture, transport, and storage, while recognising that regions will progress at different speeds.

The Study is structured around four key phases:
🔹 Phase 0: Establish national CCUS foundations: strategies, targets, and governance
🔹 Phase 1: Enable first-of-a-kind projects through de-risking tools and financing mechanisms
🔹 Phase 2: Expand infrastructure via European networks and cross-border CO₂ corridors
🔹 Phase 3: Scale and optimise towards market maturity, with commercial models and reduced public support

Together, these phases provide a clear and coherent pathway: from early government enablement to a competitive European carbon management market with predictable revenues and minimal reliance on subsidies. Rather than prescribing fixed regulatory solutions, they indicate the levels of maturity of the market and the corresponding policy needs at each stage.

🪜 Ultimately, sequencing matters. A stepwise, coordinated approach is essential to unlock investment, connect emitters across Europe, and deliver a scalable CCUS market.

Scrapping carbon pricing will not solve industry’s challenges; it risks creating a worse outcome.

Energy costs for industry must be addressed by government, but that can be done without undermining investor confidence or dismantling the framework that is already helping to attract billions into UK industry and technologies of the future such as carbon capture, utilisation and storage.

At a time of growing global demand for low-carbon products, this approach would weaken the UK’s ability to compete in emerging international markets and boost exports. Instead, we risk ending up in the perverse position of facing carbon costs at the border rather than generating revenue for the UK Exchequer, while also putting at risk major investment in our industrial heartlands that will drive long-term growth.

The response from CCSA CEO Olivia Powis to the Conservative Party’s announcement on scrapping the UK’s carbon pricing regime is set out below👇

📰 Great to see the Minister for Investment, Lord Jason Stockwood, make a passionate case for CCUS, arguing that it matters deeply to industrial areas like the Humber and Teesside as it can protect jobs, attract investment and keep them economically competitive. Read more in his Yorkshire Post article 👉 https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/opinion/columnists/humbers-ps15bn-carbon-capture-investment-plan-matters-deeply-to-me-politically-and-personally-lord-jason-stockwood-5931103

🏭He is absolutely right to point out that CCUS is not just about climate policy, but is a vital part of a practical long-term industrial strategy and will make a real difference to communities with historic manufacturing and energy roots, unlocking major private capital and protecting jobs.

📈 If we are serious about growth, we need to back technologies like CCUS that can revitalise key industries, such as chemicals, cement, oil refining, across the UK - helping them stay competitive for the long term.

🏗️ As the Minister sets out, the Humber could unlock up to £15bn of private investment if CCUS goes ahead which means Viking CCS must be deployed and the East Coast Cluster must be built out to its full potential. However, that will only happen if the right policy and regulatory frameworks are in place to maintain investor confidence.

💼 Businesses considering investment in the UK’s industrial heartlands are making decisions over decades, not short term election cycles, and uncertainty over future frameworks can have real consequences for investor confidence. Now is the time to maintain momentum, not scale back, if we want to safeguard industries, create jobs and deliver the economic growth the UK urgently needs.

🇪🇺🇳🇱 Last week, EU Deputy Director Stefano Miriello, was in Rotterdam for the Carbon Capture Europe Summit 2026!

Stefano moderated a panel unpacking the importance of creating a cross-border CO₂ transportation infrastructure connecting South and North Europe. The conversation focused on:
🔹 The importance of adopting a phased approach to scale up CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure by starting from industrial clusters
🔹 The role of a flexible regulation in enabling cross-border CO₂ transport and opening up to third-party countries outside the EU
🔹 Integrating pipeline and non-pipeline transport modes from the beginning to ensure flexibility and emitters' access to infrastructure

👥 Our warmest thanks to Leader Associates for having us and to Gilles Decan, Natalie Van der Mey - Hines, Martin Frings, and Giannis Stavrakopoulos for their timely insights!

📣On International Women’s Day today, the CCSA is proud to celebrate the women driving progress across the CCUS sector.

👷🏽‍♀️From engineering and geology to policy, project delivery, operations and apprenticeships, women are playing a vital role in delivering carbon capture and storage across the UK and Europe. As projects move from policy into construction and operation, building a diverse and inclusive workforce is not just the right thing to do, it is essential to delivering at pace and scale.

👩‍💼At the CCSA, we are proud to be led by a female CEO and President, and that 40% of our Board are women. Women also head up our UK policy, external affairs and membership teams. Strong female leadership is helping to shape the strategic direction of the sector at a pivotal moment for delivery.

👩🏽‍💻We are especially proud of the women across our UK and EU offices who are already establishing themselves as emerging leaders in the sector, and we look forward to continuing to support and champion their professional growth.

📈The sector’s success depends on attracting and retaining the very best talent. A diverse workforce is a stronger workforce, and we are proud to see women shaping the future of industrial decarbonisation, low-carbon growth and clean power.

👩🏾‍🤝‍👩🏼We are pleased to announce we are developing a Women in CCUS network. Thanks to CCSA members Tanisha Beebee (Harbour Energy), Kathryn Emmett (Slaughter and May), Laura Gillions (Carbon Clean), Els Jooris (Shell) and Christine Watts (Associated British Ports) for their interest and support in getting this set up. More details to follow.

👏To all the women working across CCUS, thank you for your expertise, leadership and impact. Together, we are building a sector that is not only delivering net zero but creating opportunity across the UK and Europe.

Olivia Powis, CEO, says: “Delivering CCUS at scale is all about people. If we’re serious about success, we have to build a genuinely diverse workforce and support women at every stage of their careers, from apprentices to senior leaders. I’m proud of the progress our industry is making to champion women, but there’s more to do, and we’re committed to doing it.”
