Lauriston Lights is a charity which aims to empower and inspire bright children from disadvantaged backgrounds to reach their full potential through communication and learning. The summer school aims to help with two interlinked problems: The first is found in the education system – bright children, from disadvantaged backgrounds, who have the potential to do well academically getting ‘lost in the

system’ once they reach secondary school, and thus not fulfilling this potential. The second is found in the social situation of these same children, who do not necessarily receive academic encouragement or support at home, for various reasons, and thus do not have the aspirations, or the confidence to achieve these aspirations, of children with more academically supportive and confident parents.

Another successful year completed for Lauriston Lights Oxford camp, hosted by The Oxford Academy! Mentees have been very busy, taking part in workshops like science experiments, French, drama, film making, escape rooms, space day and sports of every kind, just to name a few! Thank you to everyone who took part, we hope you loved it as much as we did, and of course to our wonderful, hard working mentors! We couldn’t do this without you!

This summer all three of our summer camps were lucky to be joined by Katie Tait, Archaeologist, to teach our mentees about the difference between archaeology and palaeontology, discover grave goods, learn a brief history of humans, and explore how truly cool and varied archaeology is as a career.

At Lauriston, we aim to help prepare young people for their transition from primary to secondary school.

We do this through a number of workshops that aid our mentees in discovering their talents, growing their knowledge and challenging their thoughts and ideas.
