About the RPT
The Register of Professional Turners is composed of wood turners who offer a service of professional quality to the public, and whose work, prior to admission, has been approved by competent assessors as being of good quality. Turners who are accepted on the Register will be awarded a certificate, and, so long as they continue to pay their membership subscriptions, may use the letters RPT (ie Registered Professional Turner) after their names, on business cards letterheads etc. They are entitled to use the Register logo, and may also refer to being on the Register of Professional Turners supported by the Worshipful Company of Turners of London. The Company has the right to withdraw these privileges at its discretion. The RPT’s aim is to advance the art and craft of turning in the UK by supporting its professional practitioners;
Its objectives are:
To encourage the appreciation by the general public of good quality turning,
To assure prospective purchasers of turned work that high standards of design, ex*****on and finish will be obtained from craftsmen and craftswomen who are members of the Register,
To promote co-operation and companionship among professional turners,
To encourage the proper teaching of the craft of turning. The following selection criteria must be satisfied to be included as a member of The Register of Professional Turners;
Quality of Work – requisite skill level must be shown. Ex*****on of work must be demonstrated to be of high standard. Certificate of Public and Products Liability Insurance must be produced. Professional Outlook – evidence of accounting, letterheads, website etc. must be shown. Safe working practices are followed. Agree to adhere to the Code of Practice……
The Code of Practice
The Code of Practice requires that Registered Professional Turners
Charge reasonable hourly rates – i.e. not undercutting other professional turners. Not undercutting the suggested minimum charge for demonstrations, and teaching. Public Liability insurance must be held. Must be registered with HMRC. Must maintain high standards in their work. Must accept the obligation to hand out Demonstration and Teaching feedback forms. – sanction being removal from lists. Must comply with the RPT’s complaints procedure. Adhere to safety standards. Guidance will be given. Must conduct their business in a professional manner. However, none of the Company, the Register, nor any of their respective officers, shall have any liability for any form of professional or personal misconduct by persons who are on the Register, although reports of any such misconduct will be investigated, whenever practicable.
