Free school meals have changed in England, and the £7,400 rule is causing confusion 👀

There are now three routes to a free school meal:

🍽️ Universal infant free school meals: Every child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 at a government-funded school can get one, whatever their family income.

🍽️ Targeted free school meals: This includes families on Universal Credit with annual household earnings of £7,400 or less, plus families receiving certain other qualifying benefits.

🍽️ Expanded free school meals: Since the start of the 2026/27 school year, children in households receiving Universal Credit can qualify even if household earnings are above £7,400.

Here’s the bit to check: getting a free school meal through the expanded category doesn’t automatically mean your child qualifies for HAF holiday activities. HAF generally remains linked to the targeted rules.

If you receive Universal Credit and thought you earned too much for free school meals, check with your council or your child’s school and apply. And if your child is in Reception to Year 2, it’s still worth checking whether they qualify under the targeted rules, even though their meal is already free.

Save this and send it to a mum who needs to know 💜
