STOPAIDS STOPAIDS | Uniting UK Voices on the Global Response

STOPAIDS is the network of UK agencies working since 1986 to promote an effective global response to HIV and AIDS. With 80 members behind us, we raise a united voice to rally and maintain the UK’s leadership in the global response to HIV. Together, and with people living with HIV at the centre of our efforts, we fight for a global response that respects, protects and fulfils human rights. We give

decision-makers the proof – and sometimes the push – they need to make the right, smart choices to help improve the lives of the millions of people around the world needing treatment, prevention, care and support. Vision:
A world in which people with HIV are at the centre of a fully financed response which protects, respects and fulfils human rights, where all people with HIV are healthy and safe, and where all people without HIV remain HIV-free. Mission:
To encourage, initiate and support strong UK leadership in the global response to HIV and AIDS across government, civil society, and other relevant actors.

"We cannot...risk the reversal of decades of progress. Rather, we should learn from these difficult lessons and properly fund the global HIV response to ensure we can end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030."

Dr Beccy Cooper MP in The Independent this weekend.

Aid cuts by the US, and planned cuts by the UK, risk undermining decades of progress and could put millions of lives in danger, writes Beccy Cooper

*Take the HEAR CSO Global Survey to shape the future of global health architecture.*

Changes to financing, governance and access strategies for global health are coming. Civil society has been under-represented in many reform discussions. Help change this! Take the Health Architecture Reimagined Civil Society Organization Global Survey today. Civil society and diverse community voices must shape the future. To date, HEAR CSO has convened seven regional consultations involving 129 individuals from 57 countries across a range of health issues. The survey expands civil society and impacted community voice at a crucial time. You can complete it even if you attended a consultation.

HEAR CSO, a partnership including CSEM for UHC-2030, Global Fund Advocates Network, Global Network of People living with HIV (GNP+), ITPC, NCD Alliance, STOPAIDS and WACI Health, is running a global survey to gather civil society and diverse community priorities on how global health is funded, governed, and delivered.

📝 Take the HEAR CSO Global Survey (10–15 minutes) and share it with your networks
🔗 Bitly: http://bit.ly/4sO3Duv
⏰ Deadline: 28th February

Your input will inform civil society tools, analysis, and advocacy in 2026, helping CSOs to advocate for health systems that are more equitable, community-led, and accountable.

"We need to build consensus for global institutions by adopting more democratic and participatory approaches...This will ensure that more funding finds its way into the hands of the poorest and most marginalised, reversing rather than further entrenching inequality."

Director of Advocacy at STOPAIDS, Tabitha Ha, shared some powerful thoughts on why communities must be centred in decision, especially at a time of global chaos, in her op-ed with The Independent this weekend.

Massive cuts to aid have rocked the world of international development, writes Tabitha Ha. As the future of global health hangs in the balance, community voices must be front and centre

Recent medical breakthroughs, and global collaboration to make medicines affordable worldwide, make ending AIDS around the world a realistic possibility in the next five years.

At the same time, global donor funding cuts are jeopardising not just this opportunity but in fact risk reversing the incredible progress we have made over the last twenty years.

We are at a critical crossroads and the role of the UK is central to determining which path we take.

We have joined a powerful alliance with The Independent, UK HIV organisations, and MPs from across the political spectrum, to write a letter to the Prime Minister to call on him to ensure the UK’s leadership role in ending AIDS by 2030: politically champion global accessibility to lenacapavir and the goal of ending AIDS at all levels; confirm sufficient funding for three critical international institutions that drive the global HIV response (, , and ); and ensure increased funding to the communities at the heart of the HIV response.

If you want to join us, you can sign a pre-written letter to your MP, to let them know that we can end AIDS if we choose to: https://endingaids.eaction.org.uk/ukleadership

Thanks to recent medical breakthroughs, we now have new game-changing medicines at our fingertips that are often described as 'the closest thing to an HIV vaccine'.

Working together, The Global Fund aligns efforts, scales proven solutions and delivers impact in the fight against AIDS.

The partnership provides 26% of all international financing for HIV programs. Tackling barriers to HIV services, it expands community-led testing, tailors care for people living with HIV, and improves access to treatments.

Investing in the unique Global Fund partnership is one of the most effective ways to save lives, improve the health of those living in the poorest communities and reinforce global health security.

HIV: State of the Fight – results achieved in 2024 in countries where the Global Fund invests:

✅ 12.3 million people reached with HIV prevention services

✅ 25.6 million people were on lifesaving antiretroviral therapy for HIV

✅ 648,000 mothers living with HIV received medicine to keep them alive and prevent transmitting HIV to their babies in 2024.

In just under a month from today, the fight to end AIDS, TB, and malaria reaches a pivotal moment.

The UK must not turn away.

On Friday, 21 November, The Global Fund's 8th Replenishment Summit – co-hosted by the UK and South Africa – will bring world leaders together to commit the investments needed to save millions of lives. A successful replenishment is a critical step towards ending AIDS, TB, and malaria as public health threats by 2030.

More than 70 million lives have been saved by The Global Fund partnership in over 2 decades. An achievement that demonstrates what is possible when governments, the private sector, and philanthropy work together.

Effective multilateralism works, and the UK plays a central role.

Together, we can save up to 23 million lives and move closer to a world free from the deadliest infectious diseases.

We will to end AIDS, TB and malaria.

Anticipated cuts to the UK’s commitment to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria would reverse decades of progress and lead to otherwise preventable deaths.

With the devastating impacts of aid cuts already being felt worldwide – and the UK stepping up as co-host of The Global Fund’s replenishment conference next month – government must honour its responsibility to global health by at least maintaining its previous funding pledge to this lifesaving, worldwide partnership. Failing to do so would send a "terrible message" as our CEO Mike Podmore explains:

“Not only did the UK already make a 30% cut three years ago, but to date no host has ever reduced their commitment from their previous pledge. This would represent a serious lack of leadership and undermine the UK’s reputation and soft power.”

This World Health Summit, we’ll be advocating for meaningful participation in digital governance structures like the World Health Organization Global Strategy on Digital Health.

The WHO has a key role to play in supporting national governments and digital technology companies to be accountable to human rights in the digital age.

In 2026 the WHO will revise its Global Strategy on Digital Health.

This strategy must be developed through a process that prioritises equity, participation and access for all – including the meaningful consultation of young people, marginalised communities and civil society.

11/10/2025

We’re advocating for a human-rights based approach to digital health at .

Our priorities

1. Digital inclusion

We urge global leaders to improve digital health access – especially for young adults and marginalized communities.

2. Action against technology-assisted abuse

Governments and global bodies must act to prevent and redress tech-facilitated abuse.

3. Meaningful participation

Young adults and marginalised communities to have a real voice in shaping the future of digital technology.

Putting People and Human Rights First in Digital Health: our new, practical tool to protect human rights within health programmes using digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) is released today.

Created in response to growing concerns that digital and AI-based technologies in healthcare are progressing more rapidly than the protections in place for human rights, we’re issuing this free resource as part of our role in global partnership initiative the Digital Health and Rights Project.

Designed to help implementers, communities, funders, and civil society in protecting and promoting human rights within digital health interventions, the resource is available on our website.

The toolkit includes a checklist to help practitioners tackle six critical challenges facing individuals and communities when using digital technologies and AI for health: accessibility, literacy and empowerment, safety and efficacy, privacy, access to justice, and participation. It also includes guiding questions for implementers and donors to consider during the design, implementation, and evaluation of digital health programmes to address key challenges to human rights.
