TSSA is proud to have co-signed this letter alongside other trade unions, calling on MPs to submit a request for Private Members Bill on strengthening legal protections for transport workers against assaults at work.

Violence against transport workers has become an unacceptable daily reality and the risks they face are huge. The violence and abuse is increasing and current measures just aren’t making a big enough difference.

That’s why we’re calling on the government to introduce a specific criminal offence for assaults against transport workers. This will make it more likely that prosecutions will happen and there’ll be more of a deterrent to perpetrators.

We won’t stop until our members and transport workers across the country get the support they need to be safe at work. ✊

Today, our General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust is featured in Labour Outlook, to mark May Day and call for a pro-worker government.

While the passage of the Employment Rights Act presents the biggest upgrade in workers’ rights for a generation, big gaps still remain, especially in relation to the transition to Great British Railways.

TSSA has longed campaigned for public ownership of the railways, but jobs, conditions and union recognition must be protected.

"Support for working people isn’t just for the statute book; it is something that a Labour government should live and breathe in everything it does."

This May Day, we stand with transport workers everywhere.

As TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust says, workers need more than words— we need action: secure jobs, fair pay, safe workplaces, and properly funded public transport.

Our message is clear, our members deserve:

✊ A pro-worker government
✊ Protection of jobs and conditions
✊ Stronger rights at work
✊ Increased investment in public transport
✊ A just transition for workers in the move to Great British Railways

May Day is a call to organise and fight for the future working people deserve. TSSA will always be front and centre of doing that for all transport and travel workers.

Yesterday, TSSA’s General Secretary and staff met with Heidi Alexander, Secretary of State for Transport to raise concerns about the transition to Great British Railways.

TSSA has been campaigning for public ownership of the railways for decades and supports this move by the government, but workers and our members must be protected in that transition.

TSSA raised current challenges, including union re-recognition, the lack of protection for worker pensions and job cuts.

TSSA will continue to hold the government to account and fight for decent jobs, pay and conditions for all our members.

To mark Workers’ Memorial Day, TSSA publishes the stark results of its latest Violence at Work Survey which reveals over half of TSSA reps have suffered violence and abuse at work on multiple occasions.

Incidents reported include verbal and racial abuse, spitting, physical assaults, threats involving weapons, harassment and, in some cases, sexual assault.

TSSA’s Keep Transport Workers Safe campaign calls for:

🚨 More resources for British Transport Police

🚉 Properly staffed stations and trains, and an end to lone working

✅ Real protection for staff on the frontline

✋🏼 A specific criminal offence for violence against transport workers

Today, on International Workers’ Memorial Day, we remember those who have lost their lives, been injured, or have become ill simply for doing their jobs.

As a transport and travel union, we know the risks our members face every day—on the roads, rails and seas. Behind every journey is a worker who deserves to return home safely.

But we know all too well, the challenges transport workers face every day in their workplaces, including the sharp increase in violence and assaults, racial abuse and sexual harassment, simply for doing their jobs. This is totally unacceptable and must end.

We honour their memory by continuing the fight for stronger protections, better conditions, and a culture where safety always comes first.

Remember the dead. Fight for the living.
