Science Based Targets initiative Enabling organizations to take swift climate action by setting ambitious emissions reduction targets.

02/04/2026

New research shows science-based targets drive business performance.

Yesterday, we released new research on the impact of setting science-based targets — the strongest evidence to date that climate action grounded in science accelerates not only emissions reduction, but boosts business performance across four key measures of competitive advantage: strategic cohesion, stakeholder confidence, financial performance and climate impact.

Key findings:
- 91% of companies with SBTi targets report positive business impacts
- 80% strengthen investor relations and stakeholder confidence
- 92% see neutral or positive effects on long-term financial performance
- 86% accelerate measurable decarbonization

More than 11,000 companies have now set or committed to set science-based targets with the SBTi, representing over 40% of global market capitalization.

The question should no longer be “why set targets?”, but “how soon can we?”. Acting early strengthens readiness, reduces risk, and positions businesses to lead in a carbon-constrained world.

What did 2025 really tell us about corporate climate action?

Even against a challenging economic and political backdrop, the signal from businesses is clear: companies aren’t pulling back—they’re doubling down. Scale is growing, the business case is strengthening, and ambition is translating into action.

In this message, SBTi CEO David Kennedy shared his reflections on the year, including:
- Rapid growth in companies setting credible climate targets across sectors and regions
- Clear evidence that climate-aligned strategies are linked to stronger planning, financial relationships, and long-term business performance
- A growing focus on implementation, with extensive stakeholder input on the second draft of our flagship Corporate Net-Zero Standard

As we look ahead, one thing is certain: ambition is shifting to action, as science-based targets scale and businesses prioritize implementation.

That’s a wrap!

The second public consultation of the draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2 is now closed. Thank you to the hundreds of stakeholders who shared their expertise and feedback—we received more than 900 responses.

Your input is essential to developing a Standard that is scientifically robust and workable for businesses—helping turn science-based ambition into credible action.

What’s next?

We’ll review feedback from the public consultation and pilot testing, alongside insights from our expert working groups. This will inform the final Standard, which will undergo internal review and approval in line with our standard development process, including approval by the Technical Council and adoption by our Board of Trustees.

Thinking about setting a target?

There’s no time to wait. Version 1.3 of the Corporate Net-Zero Standard continues to be a credible, well-established framework for companies to set science-based targets. Targets set today will continue to be relevant and provide a strong foundation for future alignment with Version 2.

We’re hiring!

We’re seeking a Managing Director to lead SBTi Services.

SBTi Services is a wholly owned subsidiary of the SBTi. It registers companies, processes their commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and validates their emissions reduction targets. It charges fees for validation of targets, providing revenues that are used to cover the costs of Services and fund the parent organization.

The postholder will have full P&L responsibility for SBTi Services, leading an international team of around 50 people who validate in the region of 2,500 targets each year.

They will work closely with the SBTi CEO, David Kennedy, and report to the independent board of SBTi Services, which is chaired by Umberto Malesci. In addition, they will be a key member of the SBTi’s Executive Leadership Team.

The role is based in London, or requires frequent travel to London. Closing date for applications is 24 January 2026.

The first week of COP30 Brazil has made one thing clear: this is the “implementation COP.”

Our team has spent its first few days in Belém leading workshops on our flagship Corporate Net-Zero Standard, joining panels with ISO - International Organization for Standardization, International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), WWF and others, and listening closely to where the climate conversation is heading.

The three things that are standing out:
1) The ‘Action Agenda’ is focussed on delivery. There's a clear shift toward measurable progress and accountability. Science-based targets and transparent reporting are becoming the foundation for turning ambition into high-impact action.

2) Collaboration is the multiplier. No company decarbonizes alone. Cross-sector partnerships and value chain engagement are accelerating progress. Our Standards give companies a common language to align, set collective ambition, and drive action at scale.

3) Standards are becoming infrastructure. As implementation scales, credible climate action needs shared frameworks everyone can trust. Our role is ensuring those standards remain robust, science-aligned, and fit for purpose as ambition meets ex*****on.

Ambition brought us here. Action will take us forward.

What does that shift mean for your organization?

Last week, SBTi CEO David Kennedy joined eight companies in the Netherlands as they reaffirmed their commitment to setting and delivering net-zero targets aligned with the Corporate Net-Zero Standard during the 2025 SBTi Net-Zero CEO Breakfast, organized by UN Global Compact Network Netherlands.

Together with Merei Wagenaar (Executive Director, UNGC Netherlands) and Marjolein Demmers (Executive Director, Natuur & Milieu), the CEOs discussed both the business opportunities of climate action and the challenges — from engaging customers and suppliers on sustainability to partnering across sectors to drive change.

Their shared message was clear: collaboration and credible targets are key to turning ambition into impact.

Buildings are at the center of the net-zero transition—both as major sources of emissions and as pioneers of sustainable innovation.

Yesterday at London Climate Action Week, we partnered with Arup to co-host “Climate Leadership in the Built Environment”—a dynamic panel event highlighting how ambitious science-based targets are transforming the buildings sector.

Here’s what we learned:

-Urgent action is needed:
With global floor space set to grow dramatically—especially in developing economies—the buildings sector must decarbonize fast. Science-based targets provide a clear, credible path forward.

-Targets are a catalyst for change:
From financing green steel to eliminating gas in new builds, companies shared how targets help drive innovation, reduce risk, and boost client confidence.

-Collaboration is key:
Shared data, aligned policy signals, and pre-competitive collaboration are essential—especially to tackle embodied carbon. Many are already working together to close knowledge gaps and build sector-wide momentum.

-There’s strong momentum:
Businesses across the sector are “still in” and stepping up—but call for greater regulatory clarity and support to match their ambition.

Many thanks to our expert panelists and everyone who joined us for an energizing and solutions-focused conversation. Let’s keep building on the momentum.

Yesterday at London Climate Action Week, we were proud to bring together a room full of climate leaders and changemakers for our flagship event, ‘Climate Ambition to Action', co-hosted with UN Global Compact Network UK.

The event began with a keynote from SBTi CEO David Kennedy, followed by two powerful panel discussions featuring senior leaders from major global businesses, financial institutions and sustainability organizations. Together, they explored how to move beyond setting science-based targets to delivering on them—turning ambition into credible climate action.

Their key takeaways:

- Science-based targets set a strong foundation:
They provide clarity of ambition, and a rallying point around which to mobilize internal and external stakeholders. However, meaningful progress depends on embedding targets into the DNA of the organization, through leadership, finance, supply chains, and culture.

- Credibility. Competitiveness. For many, science-based targets deliver both:
Business and finance leaders alike view targets as essential for long-term value and reputation. Early movers are already seeing results.

-Collaboration is a non-negotiable:
No company can decarbonize in isolation. Strategic partnerships, better data, and shared tools are all essential for success. What’s needed now are more solutionists —people ready to turn intent into implementation both inside and outside the organization.

Thank you to all our panelists and the over 200 attendees who joined us in London as well as those who joined digitally. The message was clear: business and finance leaders are ready to lead the shift from ambition to implementation.

Yesterday, SBTi CEO Luiz Fernando do Amaral had the pleasure of speaking at the ChangeNOW conference in Paris.

In his speech, Luiz identified three elements that are required to unlock a net-zero future:

✅Scope 3
Scope 3 is both companies’ biggest challenge, and where they can deliver the biggest emissions reductions. Luiz pointed out that large companies can have tens of thousands of suppliers and their top 20% of suppliers might represent 80% of their scope 3 emissions. Selecting the right suppliers and categorizing their influence and importance is therefore a crucial step.

He highlighted that companies can set supplier engagement targets with the SBTi, enabling them to deliver on scope 3 ambition, even when granular emissions data is challenging to track or unavailable.

He explained that companies have found supplier engagement targets easier to track considering they only need to take stock of which suppliers have set targets aligned to SBTi Criteria.

✅Transparency and disclosure
Luiz called for more companies to account for and disclose their GHG inventories. Only then will we be able to tackle existing data gaps in the system. By requiring their suppliers to make annual disclosures, companies can ensure a systemic transformation in both the availability and quality of data.

✅High-emitting sectors
Decarbonizing the highest-emitting industries will have the greatest impact. This is why sectors like steel and cement are among the highest priorities for the SBTi, and we have developed specific target-setting guidance for them. Luiz called for companies in these sectors to work with their competitors to overcome systemic barriers slowing the transformation of business and operating models needed for system-wide decarbonization.

Thank you ChangeNOW for hosting a fantastic summit.

Our partners at We Mean Business Coalition have reopened their hashtag program, which aims to give businesses a manageable way to address scope 3 emissions through tier 1 supplier engagement.

As supply chain emissions represent the largest source of emissions from companies (11 times larger than direct emissions on average, according to CDP), accelerating scope 3 emission reductions is a must.
