Shining a light on the hidden salt crisis this 🧂🥪

The latest blog, now live on the website, exposes the shocking levels of salt hidden in some of the UK’s most popular sandwiches — with some packing more salt than an adult should eat in a day.

“People want healthier food on their shelves, and they feel the system is often working against them.”

Echoing the voices behind the Citizens’ Charter, We’re Fed Up!, the blog highlights growing public demand for healthier food options and stronger government action on salt reduction.

Copy the link below 👇, or head to our stories to read why hidden salt in everyday lunches is a public health issue that can no longer be ignored.

How much salt is your sandwich hiding? 🥪

New research from suggests that a single sandwich can contain as much salt as nearly 5 McDonald’s Cheeseburgers!

In a survey of over 500 supermarket and high street sandwiches…
🔹 44% were high in salt
🔹 97% were low in fibre
🔹 25% were classified as ‘less healthy’ due to high levels of salt, sugar and fat – banning them from current mainstream advertising and promotions.

Sandwiches bought out-of-home - from cafes, bakeries, and coffee shops - were saltier than supermarket options. Yet many still lacked clear nutrition labelling, leaving people unaware of how much salt they’re eating.

As a result, diets across the UK are becoming overloaded with salt, raising our blood pressure and increasing risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney disease.

Worryingly, 1 in 10 sandwiches also failed to meet government salt targets due two years ago – highlighting years of weak action from government and industry, and a food system that continues to prioritise convenience over health.

But healthier sandwiches are possible, and some companies are already proving it. This we’re joining the call for government to:
✔ Update the Salt Reduction Targets
✔ Introduce tougher mandatory limits on salt and calories
✔ Hold the food industry accountable through meaningful financial penalties

Our lunchtime meal-deal shouldn’t come with a side of hidden salt. Let’s for good.
