An update on our membership policy for Girlguiding’s current members.

Girlguiding exists to empower girls and young women and help create a more equal world. Our values and beliefs have not changed. We remain committed to standing up for the rights, safety and dignity of girls and women, and to supporting marginalised communities, including LGBTQ+ people, to improve the lives of girls.

Following the Supreme Court decision relating to s*x and gender, Girlguiding's Board of Trustees confirmed that trans girls and young women, from 2 December 2025, would no longer be able to join Girlguiding. This decision was made to make sure we were operating lawfully and following our governing charity documents, which affect how our membership eligibility is defined.

We are updating our members with further operational information about the timings for this change. Current young members who are trans girls can stay with Girlguiding until 6 September 2026. Any trans girl or trans woman who is currently volunteering in a role open to women only, will need to move to a role that is open to all volunteers by 6 September 2026.

There’s more information on these changes, what they mean for members and how those affected can access support on our website: https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/information-for-volunteers/updates-for-our-members/equality-diversity-announcement-update/.

We want the forthcoming Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) guidance to be clear, workable and informed by the voices of young people and volunteering organisations, to ensure that the wellbeing of all girls remains at its heart.

2026 Election guidance

On Thursday 7 May 2026, elections will take place for the Senedd, the Scottish Parliament and for some local councils in England.

As a charity, Girlguiding must follow the guidelines set by the Charity Commission and Electoral Commission. This means staying politically impartial - we cannot endorse any political party or candidate in a Girlguiding capacity, including in meetings or on Girlguiding‑related social media. All members and volunteers must follow this guidance.

We’ve updated our elections guidance blog to help you understand what you can and can’t do during the pre‑election and election period.

If you have any questions, please contact the external affairs team at [email protected].
