☘The Irish Bat☘

Nyctalus leisleri

ialtóg Leisler

🦇Leisler’s bat is Ireland’s biggest bat. This species has a wingspan of up to 320mm, mushroom shaped tragus, and the shaggy fur, gives a 'lion's mane' appearance on the back.

Why 'The Irish Bat?' Leisler’s bat is rare in Britain and the rest of Europe but it is relatively common here. For this reason the Irish population of Leisler’s bats is considered of International Importance! 🌍

Leisler's bats are found roosting in buildings although 13% of its roosts recorded in Ireland have been in trees.

They have a distinctive level flight at greater heights than the other Irish species, from which it dives down after dung flies and beetles. It can be seen soon after sunset flying over open spaces such as parks and fields. It is one of the first bats to emerge in the evening and is quite large, so the Leisler’s bat may be confused with swifts.

BatLife Europe has named Leisler's bat as Bat Species of the Year 2026–2027.

Leisler’s bat is monitored by our Car-based Bat Monitoring Scheme. Find out how you can get involved and what else you can do to help our

🌟 1 week to go! 🌟

Our first of the year by Santiago Perea is just a week away!

We are really looking forward to hearing about Santiago's research which combines methodologies such as bioacoustics and camera trapping with advanced analytical and AI-driven approaches to study population dynamics and biodiversity responses to forest management and human disturbances.

Bats & Trees with Jim Mullholland

📆 Wednesday 28th January @ 6pm GMT
📝 1.5 hours CPD/CEU

14 of the UK’s bat species live in trees, some living in them year-round. Jim will talk about:
- which bats use trees and how
- the ecology of different bat species
- which tree features provide habitat for bats
- threats to bat populations and what we can do to help

🦇Leisler’s Bat named Bat Species of the Year 2026–2027🦇

The Leisler’s Bat has been selected as Bat Species of the Year 2026–2027 by BatLife Europe — with a big thank you to our partners across Europe who voted for this species.

Over the next two years, conservation organisations in more than 35 European countries will work together to raise awareness of this wide-ranging but vulnerable bat and to promote solutions to the threats it faces. Although widespread, the Leisler’s Bat has a patchy distribution and depends heavily on old-growth forests. It is also a remarkable long-distance migrant, travelling hundreds of kilometres between summer and winter roosts.

One of the major threats to the species is the rapid expansion of wind energy without adequate mitigation, particularly along migration routes and in forests. By highlighting the Leisler’s Bat, BatLife Europe and its partners aim to shine a light on key conservation challenges — and on the best practices needed to protect this species across borders.

📸 Free webinar: Learn how to photograph mammals in the wild with last year's Mammal Photographer of the Year winner, Paul Alistair Collins!

Wildlife photographer and MPOTY25 overall winner Paul Alistair Collins will share insights from years spent photographing British wildlife. He’ll take us behind the lens on one of his ongoing projects - photographing Norfolk’s grey seals through the winter breeding season, from the fierce battles of bulls to the tender moments between mothers and pups.

Along the way, Paul will share how to capture the essence of a subject, work a scene creatively, and translate behaviour and atmosphere into emotive images - with practical guidance and creative inspiration for anyone entering the Mammal Society’s competition this year.

🦇 🌏 Nietoperze w naszej części Europy spędzają lato przede wszystkim na strychach, poddaszach i w dziuplach, a zimują w podziemiach naturalnych (jaskinie) i sztucznych (bunkry, sztolnie itp.).

---
O tajemniczych lotach nietoperzy przeczytacie (a nawet posłuchacie) w kolejnym z Salamandrowych artykułów puszczonych w świat (wiecie, gdzie szukać dostępu 😄 👇). Bardzo Was do tego zachęcamy! 🦇💚🦇

It is published in the Zenodo repository and is freely available online here: https://zenodo.org/records/15346727 . Led by Adrià López Baucells: Connecting Bats & People and compiled and curated by many collaborators.

The primary objective of this dataset initiative is to compile and summarise all available information on bat monitoring protocols and programmes being implemented across the EUROBATS Parties and Range States
