The Storytellers Foundation

The Storytellers Foundation Our mission: to fund and create memoirs for terminally ill people in the UK to ensure their legacies live on forever.

The Storytellers Foundation is a registered not-for-profit organisation that supports some of society’s most vulnerable people when they need it most. Partnering with hospices and charities we support those facing terminal and serious life-limiting conditions by enabling them to have memoirs and life stories professionally written ensuring they are never forgotten.

"Something that struck me was how much emotional support they gave me." For Phoebe, Dougie Mac's wellbeing care was just as important as her pain management.

‘I’ve got osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. I was in hospital last year and the advanced nurse practitioners recommended I get pain management support from Dougie Mac. I’ve been there on and off ever since. Something that struck me was how much emotional support they gave me. You can tell the staff really care. It was really helpful that my room there was big enough that I could have people to stay. I was in for quite a long time so it would have been hard to be away from my husband Karl for that long, and it meant so much that he could stay.’

“Every man has two deaths, when he is buried in the ground and the last time someone says his name. In some ways men can be immortal.” - Ernest Hemingway

“I’ve learned not to take life for granted.” Lesley and Betty met as in-patients at and formed a truly special friendship

Lesley: ‘I was diagnosed with cancer last year. It was curable but none of my treatments worked. They all failed, every single one. It’s terminal now so my remaining days will be spent at Dougie Mac. It’s tough because I’m only 58. I like hanging out with Betty, who’s in the room next to me. She’s one of my mates now and she comes and sits on my bed and we eat chocolate and crisps and watch football. I spend my days reading, doing crosswords, crocheting and, in good weather, my sister and daughter come and take me out in the garden in the wheelchair. The nurses are like family and I feel safe with them - when I’m feeling low, they come and talk to me. It’s made me not stress about my cancer and actually come to terms with it. It no longer frightens me. I’ve learned not to take life for granted.’

Betty: ‘I remember coming to Dougie Mac once for an event and thinking what a lovely garden it had. I first came as a patient in June. I’d been sent for a chest x-ray and they found that I’ve got cancer in my lungs. I had an operation. It’s rather knocked the stuffing out of me. This spell of illness seems to have gone to my brain. I don’t remember things properly and it really annoys me. Coming to Dougie Mac has been a revelation. I never imagined it would be so clean and comfortable. The staff are so kind and friendly. You feel you’ve known them forever. I feel like that about Lesley too - we keep each other company.’

'I was always a joker, even during my Royal Navy days!'

“If there was a practical joke to play or a gag to be made, I was usually the culprit. I had three brothers and whether I was keen on making sure they didn’t get all the attention or whether just making people laugh and having fun was in my genes I don’t know. But laughing and joking came easy to me. I was 17 when I joined the Royal Navy, a few years after the Second World War finished. I took my duties very seriously of course but I would always be the one trying to get the laughs. My wife always said I had her giggling up the aisle too, we had such fun together. Spending time with my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren means I can surprise them when they think they are meeting a boring old relative - I will be the one pulling silly faces and trying to make them laugh!”

🍁 November is National Home Care and Hospice Month a time to acknowledge and thank the professionals who provide home care and hospice services including complementary therapies, social support and wellbeing workshops.

Our mission is to raise funds to create Memoir Grants for terminally ill people to tell their life stories as a legacy for loved ones. Working with UK hospice partners who nominate recipients, we fund and and facilitate the writing and publishing of memoirs to be treasured by family.

We also support charities in raising vital funds through bespoke publishing with our partner .

"Creative and expressive writing often produces something of real human value which can be left behind, and loved ones treasure the work of those they have lost. Writing about life experiences can create legacy for family members too young to remember, or for those yet to be born." - Dr Siobhan Campbell of The Open University.

Our CEO and Founder Nick Boulos recently spoke to the Mayfair Times about starting biography business Master Storytellers, his motivation for creating The Storytellers Foundation and ambition for the foundation's future.

"When someone calls and says, 'You did a book for my dad who's got dementia. He's not really my dad any more, but I'm so happy that I have this book, because I'm with him in those pages.' What could be more important in life than doing that for someone?" Nick says. "It's about doing something meaningful and kind when these families are going through the worst possible time."
