Lord, hear our prayer for all women and men, boys and girls who do
not have homes.
For those sleeping in doorways and parks, in hostels and night shelters.
For families who were evicted because they couldn't pay their rent.
For those who have no relatives or friends who can take them in.
For those who are afraid and without hope.
Jesus, help us to see your face in the eyes of every homeless person we
meet. And guide us in what we should do to help them.

What are the main causes of homelessness in England?
Homelessness doesn’t have a single cause; it’s usually the result of several things building up. The most common causes include:

Leaving institutions
– People leaving care, the armed forces or prison can have fewer housing options and support networks.

Lack of affordable housing
– A chronic shortage of social housing and rising private rents leave many people with few options.

Relationship breakdown
– Family conflict, domestic abuse, and the breakdown of partnerships are major triggers.

Financial hardship
– Job loss, low wages, or benefit delays can quickly lead to rent arrears and eviction.

Health challenges
– Mental health, addiction, and long-term illness can make it harder to maintain a tenancy.

Ava's CHC grant story

Moving into a first flat with a young child is a monumental milestone, but for many, it comes with daunting financial pressures and empty rooms that lack the warmth of a true home.

The beginning of a new chapter
When *Ava secured her first-ever tenancy, the excitement was matched by a very stark reality: she had virtually nothing to fill it with. With an open-plan layout where the living area flowed directly into the kitchen space, she faced the challenge of making a completely bare flat functional, warm, and most importantly safe for her toddler.
Without the financial cushion to buy essentials, the prospect of turning the flat into a home felt overwhelming. She needed the basics to live comfortably: curtains, a rug, and crucial safety items like a baby gate to keep her son secure while she prepared meals.

Turning point, a Church Homeless Charity grant
Thankfully, at Church Homeless Charity, we were able to provide her with a grant to help her buy the items she needs.
Instead of getting into financial debt trying to make ends meet, *Ava was given the breathing room she needed. The funding allowed her to purchase those vital household goods and essentials.

Looking to the future
This grant did much more than provide curtains, lamps, and household goods; it provided peace of mind, dignity, and a solid foundation for the future. Now that her home is secure and stable, she is planning for the next chapter: once her son starts nursery, she hopes to apply for training to pursue her dream of working with children with learning needs.

World Homeless Day 10th October!
World Homeless Day will soon be here before you know it, so we want to make sure you know now why it matters and how you can get involved.

World Homeless Day began as a grassroots movement, created by people who wanted to raise awareness of homelessness in their own communities. Today, it’s marked across dozens of countries, but the purpose remains simple:
Raise awareness of the challenges people face when they are homeless.

Spread knowledge about what homelessness really looks like beyond stereotypes and assumptions.

Bust misconceptions that can prevent people from getting the support they need.
Help communities take practical steps to support people who are homeless or at risk.

As the day approaches, we’d love for supporters, workplaces, churches, and community groups to fundraise for CHC. Whether it’s a coffee morning, a sponsored walk, or a simple donation, every contribution helps someone take a step toward stability.

We’ll be publishing fundraising resources closer to the date, including posters, social media graphics, and simple ideas for getting started.

We recently provided a grant to a scheme that helps veterans experiencing homelessness to help fund their climb up Blencathra in the Lake District.

Their support worker told us:
"Although the walk may have been challenging in parts, the sun was shining, the views were amazing, a perfect day for anyone’s mental health. Mark walked ahead, where he shared his walk on TikTok, telling everyone how he couldn’t imagine where he was 5 weeks ago, being street homeless, to now walking up a mountain. Mark’s positivity is totally infectious, and although he can sometimes be a bit much, everyone is just so happy that he is in such a good place.”

Paul's case study story: how a CHC grant helped him move away from homelessness.

Paul is a former Royal Air Force Senior Aircraftman who served for over a decade. Following his discharge, he faced significant challenges adjusting to civilian life, which led to periods of instability, poor mental health, and homelessness.
Despite these hardships, Paul showed remarkable resilience by retraining as a chef and maintaining steady employment for several years. Unfortunately, losing his employment-linked accommodation triggered a return to housing instability, resulting in periods of sofa surfing and homelessness.

Throughout his recovery, Paul has consistently engaged with a wide range of support services, including substance misuse and mental health programs, veteran-focused initiatives, and homelessness agencies. Alongside a longstanding diagnosis of depression, he has always maintained a strong willingness to seek help and improve his circumstances.

The right support at the right time....

Recognising an opportunity to help, Paul's support worker contacted Church Homeless Charity, allowing us to provide a grant for him to attend the Rawthey Project. This vital organisation supports vulnerable veterans, emergency services personnel, and NHS staff by offering peer-led outreach, hardship relief, and residential recovery programs designed to prevent homelessness, addiction, and psychological trauma.

Looking Ahead.....

Today, Paul has achieved sobriety and remains deeply committed to his ongoing recovery. He is also currently awaiting an autism assessment to better understand his support needs. Looking ahead, he is due to begin university in September, a milestone in rebuilding his independence and prospects. His dedication to recovery, proactive engagement with support services, and exciting step into higher education stand as a testament to his determination to achieve long-term stability and wellbeing.
