Faith's Story - How CHC grants help change people's lives.

Leaving care
Faith* arrived at supported accommodation for homeless young people after leaving care. Having a flat at the scheme brought stability, but it also came with new responsibilities. For the first time, she was expected to manage her own living space, pay bills, and make limited money stretch far enough to cover her essentials. The fear of falling behind or getting into debt caused Faith considerable anxiety, adding to the challenges of leaving care.

Finding the confidence to be herself
As Faith settled into the scheme, she began opening up to staff about something she had been struggling with for a long time – her gender identity. After initially applying for help with household items and utility costs, Faith shared that she wanted to begin living more openly as herself and needed clothing that reflected her identity.

At the same time, worries about debt and utility bills were causing her significant anxiety. Staff worked alongside Faith to help resolve these issues and provide reassurance during a period of major change in her life.

Support that made a difference
A grant from CHC helped Faith with utility costs and enabled her to buy feminine clothing and shoes. While practical in nature, the support had a much deeper impact, helping Faith feel more comfortable, confident, and able to express who she really is.

The grant also strengthened the trust between Faith and her support workers, allowing her to speak openly about her needs and access the help available to her.

Looking ahead
With fewer financial worries and growing confidence in her identity, Faith is now feeling more positive about the future. The support helped provide not just practical assistance, but a sense of acceptance and belonging at a pivotal moment in her journey.

“I feel much more comfortable being myself now, and I know I can talk openly about what I need.“

For many LGBTIQ+ people, homelessness isn’t just about losing a roof over their heads, it’s about losing safety, belonging, and the freedom to be themselves.

We sat down with Chima Itabor from The Outside Project’s Anira House to discuss the unique, often overlooked challenges facing the LGBTIQ+ community and why mainstream services are failing to provide the specialist support they need.

From the trauma of rejection to the vital impact of simple, practical support, learn how we’re working together to help individuals rebuild their lives with dignity.

Because of your donations, a recent CHC grant enabled residents at a Riverside scheme to experience connection, growth, and fun. From hosting vibrant Pancake Day celebrations to organising festive Easter buffet events, these activities have been about so much more than just food.

From the support workers: By planning menus, budgeting for ingredients, and shopping for supplies, our customers have taken the lead on these projects, building essential life skills and confidence along the way. Whether they were sharing secret pancake flipping techniques or enjoying the first sunny day of the year together, the focus has been on fostering new friendships and creating a sense of belonging.

Check out our spring 2026 newsletter, where we are highlighting the older generation who find themselves homeless, as homelessness does not discriminate; it can affect people who never expected to find themselves in this situation later in life.

In Cambridge, we provided the grant for a 12-week music therapy course to a homeless scheme. Residents at the scheme were able to engage in a weekly session with a licensed professional.
The impact goes far beyond the music. By working together in a supportive group setting, the residents are developing healthier relationships, boosting their self-esteem, and rediscovering a sense of purpose. Providing access to these creative tools is a vital step in supporting their journey toward recovery and lasting lifestyle change.

We want to say a huge thank you to Mike Jordan for raising over 1k for CHC during the London marathon!

We can't thank Mike enough, and everyone who was able to support him.

Here is Mike's just giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/page/mike-jordan-london-marathon-2026 -section-marker

Mike's story:

Running 26.2 Miles to Help Rebuild Lives

On Sunday, April 26th 2026, I will be lacing up my running shoes and taking on the amazing challenge of the London Marathon. I am incredibly lucky to have been offered a place (the chance of a lifetime!) and so I would like to run to raise vital funds for the Church Homeless Charity.

I chose to support the Church Homeless Charity because they do more than just offer a temporary fix. They provide grants for individuals facing homelessness to help them rebuild their lives step-by-step. Whether it's funding for basic clothing, travel to a job interview, or the essential furnishings needed to turn a bare hostel room into a place of comfort, they step in where local authorities often cannot.

I would be incredibly grateful for any donation you can give. Every single penny goes directly to the Church Homeless Charity, fueling their mission to provide shelter, support, and hope.

As a Christian myself, I value the fact that the Church Homeless Charity's work is guided by Christian values, but is offered to people of all faiths and backgrounds.

Thank you for reading my story and for your encouragement. Any donation, however large or small, would be hugely appreciated, and will help make every one of those 26.2 miles count!
