Protecting black rhinos in one of the harshest landscapes on Earth takes commitment, resilience… and donkeys 🫏

Thanks to everyone who supported our 2024 Big Give Christmas Appeal, together we raised £84,332 for Save the Rhino Trust’s Mounted Patrol Unit in Namibia’s Kunene Region.

Because of you, rangers stayed in the field, rhinos were monitored across remote terrain, the Axab camp was upgraded, and the donkeys at the heart of this work were cared for throughout the year.

In 2025 alone:• 118 confirmed rhino sightings• 224 days spent in the field• 578 combined ranger field days• 624km covered on donkeyback

This work matters. Two rhinos were still lost to poaching this year, reminding us why continued protection is so important.

🦏 World Endangered Species Day is a reminder that rhinos have roamed the Earth for millions of years. But today, their future is uncertain.

This World Endangered Species Day, it’s a reminder that three of the world’s five remaining rhino species are now Critically Endangered.

Fewer than 100 Javan rhinos remain.
Fewer than 100 Sumatran rhinos remain.
In Africa, the black rhino experienced a catastrophic decline. In the 1960s, there were an estimated 100,000 animals. By 1995, that number had crashed to fewer than 2,500 individuals due to illegal killing and habitat loss. Thanks to decades of conservation work, populations have slowly increased to around 6,700 today, though the species remains Critically Endangered.

There is hope: the greater one-horned rhino shows what conservation can achieve, rebounding from fewer than 200 individuals to more than 4,000 through sustained protection and collaboration.

But rhino conservation doesn’t happen overnight. It takes commitment, collaboration, and continued support to give these extraordinary animals a future.

Within uMkhuze, black and white rhinos share a landscape that includes one of South Africa’s last indigenous black rhino populations. For nearly 20 years, Save the Rhino has partnered with the ranger team here. We know what they are capable of - and we know how much six mobile digital radios and a 15-metre communications mast would strengthen their ability to monitor and protect rhinos across this vast terrain.
