Posted • Yinka Shonibare MBE () was born in 1962 and moved to Lagos, Nigeria, at the age of three, before returning to London to study Fine Art. His work spans painting, sculpture, photography, and film, and consistently explores issues of race and class.

Drawing on Surrealism as both an artistic and political movement, Shonibare engages with its aim to liberate the human spirit from the constraints of capitalism, the state, and cultural forces that limit the imagination.

📚 He often recalls making magical, imaginary journeys through books. In ‘Girl Balancing Knowledge’, a young girl precariously balances a stack of books on her left hand, as if they might topple at any moment. Her right foot crosses over her left in a poised, almost weightless gesture, suggesting a silent, surreal dance of joy and intellectual freedom.

Yue Minjun is a leading figure in the Cynical Realism movement. He is known for paintings and sculptures featuring his own face locked in a maniacal, frozen grin. This exaggerated laughter is a tool for exploring themes like conformity, alienation, and satire in a rapidly changing society. His iconic imagery is widely recognized in both Eastern and Western art markets.

Posted • Now Open: ‘Shao Fan: Refrain / 复沓’ at White Cube Mason’s Yard

Shao Fan’s work invites us to attune ourselves to multiple registers of time, from the flash of a rabbit’s eye to the slow accumulation of ink on paper, from vegetal growth and geological weathering to the aeons embedded in the moon’s cratered surface.

Time moves here as a rhythmic flux of transformations through which matter, memory and consciousness remain, quietly and stubbornly, alive.

📍 ‘Refrain / 复沓’ will be on view until 27 June 2026 at White Cube Mason’s Yard.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show Revisited: I Dream, I Seek My Garden

The Gold Medal winning Chelsea Garden created in 2008 by Shao Fan, under the guidance and support of Lady Linda Wong – Davies was conceived not only as a garden, but also as a spiritual and philosophical statement. Part art installation, part metaphor, but all expressed through the art of garden making – a skill well known and highly developed by the Chinese over many centuries. It was inspired by the imperial Song dynasty, but with a contemporary sensibility.
