Drawing from her South Sudanese roots and life in Australia, Atong transforms the lens into a tool for storytelling, weaving together the personal and political with striking beauty.

Influenced by legendary Malian photographers Malick Sidibé and Seydou Keïta, Atong reimagines the language of African studio portraiture through a contemporary lens. Her richly layered self-portraits feature bold textiles, saturated colour and dreamlike backdrops: evoking the duality of belonging and the complex realities of migration.

A recipient of the 2018 MECCA M-POWER Scholarship, Atong continues to redefine what it means to see and be seen, using her art to explore identity, culture and transformation.

The red body of work speaks about emotions and how important they are to human existence. I chose to single out one emotion, and that is anger.

Here we see the red warrior as a manifestation of that anger. She carries resistance, rage and the refusal to remain silent. Alongside her, Sophie raises a white flag. The gesture may suggest surrender, but not necessarily defeat. It can also speak of a ceasefire, of choosing peace, or of deciding that the battle can no longer continue in the same way.

Perhaps Sophie has fought enough. Perhaps she is exhausted by generations of struggle. Perhaps choosing peace is itself an act of resistance.

She is not surrendering to oppression. She is surrendering to healing. The red warrior has not been defeated; she has simply reached a point where another way of being becomes possible.
