The Senate is (not) a circus - Filipino Migrants call for accountability amidst Senate drama

Migrante UK calls for an end to the theatrics in the Philippine Senate. Perpetrators must be held accountable for desecrating the Senate, for using it as a hotel, and firing gun shots. The Duterte-allied senators should stop wasting the people's funds and uphold the rule of law, let Senator Bato Dela Rosa defend himself with due process under the International Criminal Court, and proceed with the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. This is the bare minimum.

The House of Representatives unanimously voted to impeach VP Sara Duterte on Monday, 11th May 2026, thus transferring the articles of impeachment to the senate. But in a bid to secure the Senate leadership and impede the impeachment trial, Senator Bato Dela Rosa turns up after 6 months of absence, resulting in Duterte-allied Senator Alan Peter Cayetano being appointed as Senate President. At the same time, the ICC warrant of arrest for crimes against humanity against Dela Rosa was unsealed and police officers under the National Bureau of Investigation came in to arrest Dela Rosa.

The Philippine Senate had since degraded itself by turning into a hotel. A senate resolution put Dela Rosa, a criminal now wanted by the ICC, under its protective custody. It had turned into a firing range on 13th May as the NBI locked down the senate to capture Dela Rosa. The NBI denied being involved in firing the shots while Duterte-allied senators cry that they are on lockdown. President Ferdinand Marcos orders a probe into the securty breach. The senate also passed a resolution to allow votes via Zoom calls. That 11 of these Senators have ongoing cases or previously convicted for a range of cases including corruption, flood control scandals, and illegal possession of fi****ms shows how dysfunctional this institution is today.

The political maneuvering is a disgrace and a disservice to the Filipino people and shows how desperate the Dutertes are to cling into power. They would rather desecrate the institutions that are supposed to uphold the rule of law and protect their self-serving agendas. The Senate had become a tool to impede justice by protecting Dela Rosa who decades before becoming senator, was a member of a paramilitary group that beheaded suspected communist insurgents without due process. He was also PNP Chief of Staff at the peak of former President Rodrigo Duterte's drug war and said ''s**t happens'' when asked about children who were killed. Rodrigo Duterte is now bound to undergo trial for crimes against humanity, and the hope is that Dela Rosa would join him in The Hague. But the former had now escaped from the Senate with his whereabouts unknown.

The Filipino people should call for Dela Rosa's arrest. Afterall if he is truly innocent, why not face his crimes in a proper functioning court through the ICC? The people should also call for Sara Duterte's impeachment trial to proceed under the same grounds that she can defend herself against the evidence presented of her corruption. The Duterte faction should therefore abide by law as due process is a right that every Filipino is entitled to, even if they have deprived their victims of the same rights.

In the same light, the Marcos administration and his allies should also be put into scrutiny. As both sides have involvement in the flood control anomaly, and with Marcos Jr. himself still enjoying the fruits of his father's plunder during the 1986 dictatorship. The investigations should not stop with the Duterte faction but should extend to the Marcos faction.

However, we cannot just wait for the ruling factions in power, both the Dutertes and Marcoses, to just do this out of the kindness of their hearts, because in reality they would rather save their own skins as we see happening now in the senate circus. The responsibility now falls on the Filipino people to truly hold accountable anyone involved with the senate fiasco, the conspiracy and polticking, the flood control scandals, and corruption then and now. We call on migrants to join the campaign for truth and justice: Dela Rosa hulihin! Duterte panagutin! Marcos Singilin!

Last week, Migrante UK responded to Filipino migrant workers in Newcastle who are facing abrupt dismissals, unfair treatment, and workplace exploitation.

Our team held consultations and provided support to workers fighting back against these unjust practices. Their situation exposes once again how access to justice for migrant workers in the UK is costly, difficult, and often out of reach. Employers and agencies know this. They use visa insecurity, unemployment, housing pressure, and fear to silence workers.

But the stories of the Newcastle 18 must not be buried.

These workers were recruited from the Philippines with promises of stable jobs, decent wages, and a better future for their families. Instead, they have faced wage deductions, job insecurity, and a system that treats migrant labour as disposable.

This is not an isolated case. This is part of a wider system built by the Philippine labour export programme and the UK hostile environment policy.

Migrante UK stands with the oppressed migrant workers in the UK . We will continue to organise, expose, and fight until justice is won.

To the Newcastle 18: your struggle is the struggle of all migrant workers.

Are you a migrant worker experiencing unfair dismissal, wage theft, excessive deductions, threats, discrimination, visa pressure, or workplace exploitation?

Reach out to Migrante UK. Tell us your story. Let us organise and fight back together.

Justice for the Newcastle 18!
End migrant worker exploitation!
Stop labour trafficking!
Junk the labour export programme!
Trabaho sa Pilipinas, hindi sa labas!

BREAKING: SHOTS FIRED INSIDE SENATE

Chaos inside the Senate building, which is under lockdown, after shots were heard.

05/05/2026

Filipino workers and their families are struggling with poverty wages.

For all regions, the monthly minimum wage is lower than the monthly poverty threshold for a family of five. A substantial wage hike is urgent and necessary.

URGENT ALERT

Nearly 20 Filipino workers face forced return after dismissal in Newcastle

London, UK – Nearly 20 Filipino workers in Newcastle are facing forced return in practice after being abruptly dismissed by Global Maritime Engineering Services (GME Services).

Recruited from the Philippines through Magsaysay Global Services, Inc., the workers were promised stable employment as skilled workers. Instead, they report discrepancies between contracts and payslips, unclear deductions, and sudden termination after being misled about a transfer abroad.

Workers have also raised concerns about a visa anomaly, having been recruited as skilled workers but later discovering they may have been issued dependant visas. This raises serious questions about deception in the recruitment and deployment process.

The company has instructed workers to return to the Philippines “with immediate effect.” While not a formal deportation, advocates warn this amounts to forced return, pressuring workers to leave before they can assert their rights.

Key concerns:
Possible wage discrepancies and underpayment
Deceptive recruitment and visa mismatch
Abrupt dismissal without fair process
Pressure to leave the UK immediately

Calls:
Stop any forced or premature return
Ensure full payment of all wages owed
Investigate GME Services and the labour supply chain
Clarify and secure workers’ immigration status

Advocates are calling for urgent action and solidarity, warning that this case reflects a broader pattern of migrant worker exploitation in the UK and across Europe. # #
