Today is , International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Lesbophobia, Interphobia and Transphobia.

This year’s theme, “At the heart of democracy”, reminds us that LGBTQIA+ people have always been part of movements for justice, dignity, freedom and equality.

The latest ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map shows the UK remaining in 22nd place out of 49 European countries for LGBTQIA+ equality, with just 6.57% scored for legal gender recognition and 0% for intersex bodily integrity protections.

At a time when rights are being challenged across the world, this must be a wake-up call. A democracy that excludes LGBTQIA+ people from equal participation is incomplete.

Across Consortium’s membership, LGBTQIA+ organisations are supporting communities every day through advocacy, health services, peer support, youth work, counselling and more.

If you are looking for LGBTQIA+ support services, you can find our members directory here: consortium.lgbt/member-directory

ILGA-Europe’s 2026 Rainbow Map shows the UK remaining in 22nd place out of 49 European countries, continuing a concerning trend of stagnation and regression on LGBTQIA+ rights.

While countries such as Spain are advancing protections and demonstrating clear political leadership on equality, the UK continues to fall behind in key areas, including legal gender recognition, intersex bodily integrity, asylum protections, and a ban on conversion practices.

The UK scored just 6.57% for legal gender recognition and 0% for intersex bodily integrity protections. ILGA-Europe also notes that recent legal developments have made legal gender recognition increasingly inaccessible in the UK.

A decade ago, the UK was recognised as a leader in LGBTQIA+ equality. Today’s ranking reflects the urgent need for renewed commitment and action from governments across the UK to protect and strengthen LGBTQIA+ rights.

Consortium supports ILGA-Europe’s recommendations, including banning conversion practices, improving access to timely and inclusive trans healthcare, and strengthening legal protections for trans+ and intersex people.

We remain committed to supporting LGBTQIA+ organisations and communities working tirelessly to secure equality, dignity and safety for all.

“In a climate of rising anti-rights movements, the latest ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map must be a wake-up call for those in power. Rights are being challenged, and we need urgent action to protect the most vulnerable in our communities. A clear action plan from the UK Government and Devolved Governments will strengthen communities, improve health outcomes, and help build a more hopeful future for the UK.”

Today marks Trans+ History Day, part of Trans+ History Week.

At Consortium, we are proud to support our member Trans+ History Week in restoring Trans+ people’s place in our collective human story and creating space to share the history lesson many of us were never taught.

Trans+ people have always been here. This year’s lessons remind us that they cannot be erased, that communities are stronger together, and that Trans+ people are more than their identities.

From pre-colonial gender diversity to acts of resistance and chosen family, these histories challenge harmful myths, connect communities and empower people to better understand both the past and present.

By uncovering and sharing these stories, we challenge prejudice and deepen understanding, helping to shape a society where Trans+ people are recognised, respected, and included.

Consortium welcomes the change in law to make anti-LGBT+ and disability hate crime aggravated offences, bringing long overdue equality with crimes motivated by racial and religious hate. This is an important step towards ensuring that LGBT+ people, disabled people, and all victims and survivors have equal access to justice, including stronger sentencing and more time to pursue cases through the criminal justice system.

However, legislation alone cannot address the root causes of hate. Across the UK, we are seeing rising levels of hostility, including anti-migrant hate, Islamophobia, antisemitism, ableism and misogyny. An intersectional approach is essential, and we stand in solidarity with all victims and survivors of hate crime, particularly in light of recent events.

Consortium’s members play a vital role in both prevention and support. Campaigns such as National Hate Crime Awareness Week help to challenge prejudice and raise awareness, while organisations like Galop and Switchboard LGBT+ Support Line provide vital front-line support to LGBT+ people who have experienced hate crime.

Many other Consortium members also offer specialist support services, which can be found through our members directory:
consortium.lgbt/member-directory

While we welcome this legislative progress, there is more to be done to prevent hate crimes from happening in the first place and to ensure that all victims and survivors can access the support they need when it does occur.

Last week, during Le***an Visibility Week 2026, our LGBT+ Fund Development Manager Emma Miller-McCaffrey had the privilege of attending a powerful and inspiring event at the London Stock Exchange in partnership with DIVA Charitable Trust.

From the celebratory market close led by Dame Julia Hoggett to impactful conversations on inclusive workplaces and allyship, the evening was a reminder of the importance of visibility, representation, and collective action for LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary people.

“It was a night where I felt my cup being filled… and a renewed fire to push boundaries and work collaboratively for a better future.”
