As a busy organisation, our staff have commitments which regularly take them to events up and down the length of the country. When that happens, we have a number of staff that we call upon to help out. You can read their profiles here.

Agnieszka Milewska IA

Aga Milewska

Coach (Beginners and Novices)

Our youngest and newest members love working with Agnieszka (Aga for short), who never loses her enthusiasm for teaching those all important basic tactics and strategies (scholar's mate, anyone?)

Make no mistake, though. Aga is an experienced and strong player, having represented both Poland and England, and in addition has FIDE International Arbiter qualification and the National Instructor title for her teaching.

Besides helping at Richmond Juniors, Aga is very busy during the week as a member of the senior management team of the well-known and highly respected Chess in Schools (CSC) charity.

Our Girls Classes will be lead by Afamia Mir Mahmoud, and are aimed at girls from 5 to 14 years of age, who are less confident and may find themselves overwhelmed in a classroom full of livelier, noisier or competitive boys.

Afamia, originally from Syria, was national women's champion 20 times from 1994 to 2014, and drew with Anatoly Karpov, the former world champion, in an exhibition match in 2009. Not only a strong player, she is also an experienced arbiter, awarded the IA (International Arbiter) title by FIDE in 2014. She is also a FIDE Instructor (FI), a title conferred for her work teaching chess, which she does in both the Arabic and English languages.

The dates for our classes in Autumn Term 2026 are:

- September 19, 26

- October 3

- November 14, 21

The Girls Classes will run from 14:00 to 17:00 on those days in Orleans Park School. They will be charged at £10 per session, but will be free to girls who are termly members of the Intermediate Group at Richmond Juniors.

We will be hosting Ameet Ghasi, one of England's strongest Grandmasters, on Saturday 4 July. Ameet will give a simultaneous display against 20 of our best young players, on our live boards. Ameet, originally from Birmingham. became British Rapidplay Champion in 2000 (jointly with Richmond Junior's alumnus, Aaron Summerscale), at the age of 13, but then stepped away from chess for a period to focus on his education and early career. From 2011, he returned to chess, became an International Master in 2021, and achieved his final Grandmaster norm and the title at the Norwegian tournament, Fagernes, in October 2024. He currently lives in Teddington.

The simultaneous display will start at 14:00 and should finish by 17:00.
