Why attend ASCAT 2026?

“This is my favourite conference on the topic of Haemoglobinopathies…”
— Fred Piel, ASCAT Faculty

ASCAT brings together a global community of clinicians, researchers and partners working across Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassaemia.

Each year, the conference creates a space for meaningful exchange — where science, clinical practice and lived experience come together to shape progress in haemoglobinopathies.

Many of the most important collaborations and conversations in the field begin at ASCAT.

Why submit your abstract to ASCAT 2026?

“Breakthroughs begin with bold ideas.”

That is the message from Sara El Hoss, our Basic Science Programme Co-Chair.

Progress in haemoglobinopathies has always been driven by researchers and clinicians who share their work with the global community. Each year, the ASCAT programme is shaped by the abstracts submitted by scientists, clinicians, and emerging researchers from around the world.

Many of the most important conversations at ASCAT begin with an abstract.

If you are working on research that could advance understanding, improve care, or challenge current thinking, we encourage you to share it with the ASCAT community.

Welcome to ASCAT 2026

We’re proud to announce the 21st Annual Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Conference.

Yesterday may have been smaller in numbers, but the energy never dropped. Conversations in the closing sessions, panels and side meetings carried the same commitment we’ve seen all week.

The community showed up with purpose — sharing learning, asking questions and creating space for what comes next. There was a strong sense of reflection and responsibility as people prepared to take insights back into practice, research, policy and service delivery.

The conference may be over, but this is the time to stay engaged and connected. ASCAT remains a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration and progress beyond the room.

Thank you to everyone who travelled, contributed and stayed with us to the end.

Yesterday brought a strong mix of clinical sessions, industry insights and patient-led discussion. The exhibition stands stayed active, with product demos, informal conversations and new partnerships taking shape.

A standout moment was the patient parallel session on sexual health — an honest space that brought lived experience and overlooked topics to the forefront.

Across the programme we saw collaboration in action: speakers challenging thinking, delegates sharing evidence and advocates keeping the focus on impact.

Three days in, the message is consistent: better outcomes, stronger advocacy and change beyond the conference walls.

What stood out most for you on Day Three?

Day Two has taken the conversation even further. From this morning’s plenaries to the condition-focused sessions and panel discussions, the rooms have stayed full and the energy hasn’t dropped.

We’ve heard from clinicians, researchers, patient advocates and policymakers — each bringing a different lens but the same purpose. The breakout sessions created space for honest conversation, lived experience and new ideas.

In the corridors and over lunch, connections have continued — collaborations forming, stories shared, and plans for what comes next.
If you were in the room today, you were part of it.

What’s one insight you’re taking away from Day Two?

We opened Day One of ASCAT with a full house and familiar faces across the rooms. We’ve welcomed delegates from across sectors — clinicians, researchers, patients, industry and policy leads — all here with one goal: to improve the lives of people living with Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassaemia.

Some have travelled across continents to get here. Some took the tube this morning. Everyone showed up ready to connect, learn and share.
From the opening sessions to the hallway conversations, the energy has set the tone for the rest of the week.

What was your standout moment of the day?

Abstract Submissions Close Tomorrow!

This year’s ASCAT theme “Haemoglobinopathies in Focus: Global Advances, Local Disparities” shines a spotlight on the growing gap between what’s possible in science and what’s accessible in care.

Breakthroughs in gene therapy, diagnostics, and disease management are real but so are the barriers faced by many patients around the world. That’s why we’re calling on researchers, clinicians, and advocates to share work that pushes for change.

Whether you're tackling health inequities, piloting new care models, or breaking ground in lab research, is your chance to be heard on a global stage.

This is more than a conference. It’s a collective effort to move the needle on care, equity, and innovation for people living with sickle cell disease and thalassaemia.
