Angela joined the Foundation in 2006 as our first employee and was instrumental in shaping us through our most formative years. Today we’re a team of 40 and a fully independent charity funding more life‑changing medical research every year.

We want to thank Angela for the lasting difference she’s made to medical research and to human health. 💚

What do you get if you cross an ever-growing health threat with a stage musical? 🎭🦠

We're thrilled that one of our AMR researchers, Cara Patel, has taken part in Lifeline - a musical highlighting the danger of superbugs (antimicrobial resistance).

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) refers to the ability of microbes, such as bacteria, to withstand the drugs designed to kill them. Across hospitals and communities, infections are becoming harder to treat. Everyday illnesses are lingering, complicating recovery, and putting lives at risk. Antibiotics are losing their effectiveness as bacteria adapt and spread.

Lifeline the Musical is running until Saturday 2 May - so you have just three more days to see it - don't midd out!

Congratulations to Cara and the whole Lifeline cast for raising awareness of this urgent issue in such a bold way.

This , we’re celebrating this year's campaign focus: Give to Gain - the idea that when we invest in women, we strengthen entire communities, and open up many more opportunities for women. 💜

By funding women researchers, we help drive medical discoveries that benefit everyone. Today, we celebrate the women pushing boundaries in medical science and recognise the donors whose support makes their work possible.

Hear from our Chief Executive, Dr Angela Hind, as she shares how we champion women in medical research, and from Dr Kristi Priestley, a member of our Research team, who reflects on her past experience as a woman in research.👩‍🔬

We love any chance to meet our researchers in person, so we’ve had a great time recently filming with some of our latest Emerging Leaders Prize winners 🎥✨

First, we visited Dr Josefien Breedvelt and her team at King's College London’s Prevention Matters Lab to hear about their work on preventing mental health conditions in children and young people.

More recently, we met Dr Gemma Knowles and her team at the ESRC Centre for Society and Mental Health (also King's College London). She spoke about what winning 1st place in our Emerging Leaders Prize means to her, and her research into gender inequalities in youth mental health - including boys’ experiences of sexism and misogyny, and how this can affect their mental health.

Keep an eye out for the full videos… 👀💚

This , meet Dr Jack Holman, one of our funded researchers working to improve the wellbeing of people living with hearing loss.🦻

📈 Hearing loss is largely preventable or treatable, but it’s becoming increasingly common due to an ageing population and ongoing stigma, which prevents people from getting tested or wearing hearing aids.

That’s why we need research like Jack’s - work that explores the social and emotional impacts of hearing loss on everyday life, and helps us understand how to better support those affected.

Thanks to you, we are now one of the UK's biggest funders of eating disorders research. 💚

We’re proud to champion this work, bringing much‑needed attention to these devastating illnesses that have been overlooked for too long.

But despite the need, eating disorders research receives just 1% of all mental health research funding.

This , join us in highlighting this urgent funding gap so we can continue supporting research that will give hope to people affected by eating disorders.

Did you expect eating disorders to be one of the least funded areas of mental health research?

Despite affecting 1.25 million people and accounting for 9% of those with a mental health condition in the UK, research funding for eating disorders still doesn’t reflect the scale or impact of these conditions on individuals, families, and healthcare systems.

Thanks to your support, we’ve been able to fund leading researchers whose work will lead to a better understanding of eating disorders, earlier interventions, and improved outcomes for people affected by them.

This , you can help us fund even more into an area that’s been neglected for far too long.

Janet, a mother of five, faces the harsh realities of climate change every day, as extreme heat impacts her home, her health, and her family.

In rural Kenya, extreme heat is reshaping pregnancy, birth and early motherhood. Homes and health facilities are often unbearably hot - with real consequences for mothers and babies.

💭 "Both of our sleeping patterns are very erratic - when it’s hot, the baby keeps crying, and so it’s difficult to sleep."

With our funding, researchers Professor Adelaide Lusambili and Dr Cherie Part are working closely with mothers and families, gathering evidence to understand the risks and find solutions that keep homes cooler and protect maternal and newborn health.

Janet’s story is just one example of why this research matters.

Climate change isn't just an environmental problem. It's a global health emergency. 🏥

This week we are spotlighting our climate change and health research, old and new (that's a hint...)

⚡🌧️ Climate change is already harming human health - from spreading diseases to new regions, to extreme heat stress, to worsening food and water shortages.

As one of our top research priority areas, we've been funding pioneering research collaborations between the UK and Africa - a continent where the impacts of climate change are felt more severely.

These projects aim to uncover the health risks of climate change and develop solutions that help vulnerable communities protect themselves and build resilience against the rapidly changing climate.

📄✨ This week, we’re sharing a powerful first-hand story of the impact of climate change, along with some exciting updates from our research team. Stay tuned!

Meet the researcher: Dr Verena Hinze 🔎

Verena (from University of Oxford, Department of Psychiatry) received a joint fellowship from the Foundation and Arthritis UK to study distress in young people living with chronic pain.

Her work focuses on understanding who is most vulnerable, why distress happens, and when it's most likely to have an impact. This is important to provide effective care to those who need it at the right time.

We’re excited to see how Verena’s research will shape better care and improve the lives of young people with chronic pain. 💚
