Did you know... some recent research* finds that recruiters spend an average of 30 seconds looking at a CV 🀯

While that might be a bit depressing, it does show that your CV needs to make an impact, and it can be hard knowing where to begin. We asked some of our expert Spear coaches for their eight top tips for a great CV. Check it out, and if you're between the ages of 16-24 and struggling to find work, why not get in touch with us about joining the next Spear Programme? πŸ‘€

πŸ’¬ "Before I started Spear, let's just say I thought I'd fail at everything in life. Didn't get out of bed, didn't want to do anything at all.

πŸ’¬ Coming to Spear has made me realise that I can change that mentality, like I definitely feel more positive within myself. You make a lot of great friends. You also, you know, the coaches are lovely. Believe me, it's really hard to actually find a job, I didn't even know how to fill out an application, and then I did one-to-ones with [the coaches], and it made me realise that, yeah, I can do this.

πŸ’¬ And I guess just being up here really takes me out of my comfort zone as well, which is, like, it's one of the scariest things I've ever done. Like, I hate being on stage, in front of everyone, but because I want to work in customer service, I just want to improve. Because I like making people happy. I like making people laugh. So that's why I'm in Spear. So I do definitely recommend it for anyone."

As well as helping you get into work, the Spear Programme gives you a sense of purpose and a new community, just like Willow found at Spear Leeds.

πŸ’Ό It's "professionalism week" on the Spear Programme and our Spear trainees are putting that into practice through company visits this week.

Company visits give our trainees a chance to experience a real workplace and learn about different career paths. Like our trainees in Kennington, who visited the offices of CVC today. Our trainees got to find out more about what the company does, ask questions and do a presentation with feedback afterwards.

Thanks to everyone taking part this week, including State Street, Derwent London and Findlay Park. 🀝

πŸ’¬ "Before I came to Spear, my life was full of no motivation. It was very negative, and it was a very dark, dark time. I didn't have anything to look forward to when it came to work. I didn't want to do my dream job. I didn't even have a dream job, to be honest.

πŸ’¬ And then I came to Spear, and it gave me the confidence to actually see that even though things may seem impossible, it is never impossible. It's just a little bit hard, and there will always be light in the dark, no matter what situation you're in, no matter where you are, no matter where you live, there will always be an opportunity. [...] I feel quite hopeful, quite positive, and I finally see the light that was there all along."

πŸ’¬ "So Covid impacted everyone, but for some, it hit worse than others. For me, I have been stuck in the same place for the past three years, and then came Spear. You know, back then, everyone was saying, "Oh, he's a 22 year-old. He's got no prospects. He's got no future."

πŸ’¬ But with Spear, I've really come out of my shell. I'm able to speak confidently. You wouldn't see me doing this before this four weeks. I'd just be stood in the corner like this and hoping everyone ignored me. But because of Spear, I can really be myself now, and I feel confident that I'll be able to progress and get a job. In the future, I really feel like I will thrive in a workplace environment, and even with this new-found confidence, I might even learn to drive. I think the future looks very bright.

πŸ’¬ And I'd just like to finish off by saying, with Spear, you get out of it what you put into it. And everyone in this group has done just that. Everyone has progressed so much. Thank you all for listening."

Cameron recently finished the Spear Programme in Preston. Thank you for sharing your story with us! πŸ™Œ

πŸ’¬ "During my last year of high school and my first year of college, I really struggled with low self-esteem. I really thought that I wouldn't get anywhere in life.

πŸ’¬ I thought I'm gonna try pushing myself a little bit more. I'm gonna try to get a job. But I was always so scared of getting a job. I thought my communication skills were quite bad. So I decided I would go to a job opportunity event in my college. And I met Harriet, and she introduced me to Spear.

πŸ’¬ And I'm so glad I joined, because it has really helped me learn a lot. I've learned how to be confident in the way I talk. I learned how to exercise my professional behaviour, and more importantly, I learned how to step out of my comfort zone. And I'm so thankful that I got the opportunity to be here.

πŸ’¬ So thanks to this, especially my mock interviews, that really helped me as well, I've realised that all I need to do is just to be less nervous. If I was just more myself, I could really get far in life. So thanks to the Spear programme and my mock interview, I'm going to try to apply for being a barista as my first job, and I'm going to go to uni to learn modern languages, because my main goal is to become a translator. I want to be able to travel the world, explore different cultures. I think my future is going to be quite bright. I think this year for me has been incredible, and I think it can only get better from here."

πŸ’¬ "Before the Spear programme, I was facing rejection after rejection, but I pushed through. I was kind of sceptical [about Spear], because I thought it was going to be like every other training programme I've attended, but I attended day one, and I was wrong. I was enlightened by a lot of things, how I should dress myself more confidently and professionally, how to speak more confidently in groups, and especially in the different mindsets that one person can have, such as fixed mindsets and growth mindsets.

πŸ’¬ An example of this is of a fixed mindset is what I used to be. I used to think that all my problems were going to be forever, that nothing's going to change. But with a growth mindset, that's where you find solutions to solve your problems so that these problems won't set you back.

πŸ’¬ But after spending five weeks at Spear, I was thinking, what do I want to do after this? So I've decided that I want to be like the wonderful people who coached me. I want to be a Spear coach just like them. I want to give people the opportunity to improve themselves, become better, because I believe that everyone deserves a chance to improve themselves, whatever background they're from."

πŸ’¬ "My life before Spear was waking up, not having the motivation/focus for finding a job, so I was basically watching YouTube videos, playing games. Basically being bored, so it was basically pretty bleak before Spear.

πŸ’¬ By doing Spear, it meant I could get a routine in my life by creating like alarms or tasks for me to set up on my phone or whatever to keep me reminded and keep me focused."

Having a routine makes a big difference for a lot of our trainees who feel stuck in the cycle of looking for jobs and getting nowhere. If you want to be like Finlay (who just finished the Spear Programme in Preston), you can sign up today to join the next programme: https://ow.ly/lhBy50WQiEr
