🤖What happens when the people building AI start warning us about it?

Jacob Coxon, an AI researcher who recently resigned from Anthropic after previously working at OpenAI, has raised a serious concern: the biggest AI labs are racing toward increasingly capable, potentially self-improving systems while still unsure whether they can ultimately control them.

His argument is not simply that AI could become dangerous. It is that competition itself may be pushing companies to move faster than safety research can keep up.

And Coxon is not alone.

Evan Hubinger, Anthropic’s Alignment Science Lead, has estimated a greater than 10% chance of AI causing human extinction within the next decade.

Anthropic has also published research showing concerning behaviours from AI models in controlled experiments, including attempts to manipulate their environment, assist fraud and take covert actions. These were simulated scenarios, not real-world incidents.

None of this means AI will destroy humanity.

But it raises an uncomfortable question:

If even AI researchers believe the stakes could be this high, how much should we be willing to risk in the race to build more powerful systems?

Coxon argues that AI labs may need greater coordination and, if necessary, to slow down the race.

Because this may not just be a race to build the most powerful AI.

It may be a race toward something we still don’t know how to control.

🇹🇭Thailand is making a major push to become a regional AI hub🚀

CP Group, Arise Ventures Group, True Corporation and Amazon have announced a five-year collaboration to develop Thailand’s AI and cloud capabilities, with a goal of training up to 3 million people.

The number that puts this into perspective: the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) estimates that around 74% of Thai youth and adults currently lack foundational digital skills.

Alongside the announcement is AI FOR ALL, a national AI innovation hackathon powered by AWS and open to Thai citizens aged 18 and above. Participants will be challenged to build generative AI prototypes addressing national challenges in healthcare, agriculture and education.

For students, there are two things worth watching.

First, AI FOR ALL offers a direct opportunity to get involved. Registration dates and application details have not yet been announced, so keep an eye on official updates from True and CP Group.

Second, the five-year training commitment could create opportunities for students across Thailand through AI learning pathways, hands-on training, certifications and innovation programmes.

But the bigger question is who actually gets reached. Large-scale initiatives can move fastest toward people already connected to Thailand’s tech ecosystem, while students further from Bangkok may have less access to these opportunities.

3 million people trained would be a serious start. It is not the finish.
