🌍 United Nations Side Event | 16 April 2026 at the Palais des Nations

The dialogue “Representation Matters: Afro-Swiss Communities Advancing the Durban Declaration” convened ca. 50 participants alongside the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent. The event brought together Afro-Swiss leaders, youth, women advocates, UN experts, policymakers, and diplomats to explore how the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action (DDPA) can better address racism, discrimination, & structural inequality in Switzerland.

🎤 Speakers & Key Contributions:

-H.E. Amb.Prof.Muhammadou M.O. Kah, Ph.D, Ambassador of Gambia – Moderator, guiding a dynamic, solutions-oriented discussion & emphasizing inclusive dialogue

-H.E. Martin Kimani, Chairperson of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent – Keynote Speaker, outlining the DDPA’s plan of action & community engagement with UN mechanisms

-Liza Brenda Sekaggya, Human Rights Officer at OHCHR and President of PWG – Highlighted Afro-Swiss engagement with UN anti-racism mechanisms, advancing the rights of women of African descent, & strengthening leadership, mentorship, and safe spaces

-Ndaté Dieng, lawyer and President Afrodyssée – Emphasized that women’s rights are essential to societal progress, with gender justice as a pillar of sustainable development, while promoting African culture & identity

-Ahmed Juma, Municipal Councillor, City of Geneva – Reflected on his journey as the first Black Municipal Councillor, highlighting challenges, the impact of racism, & encouraging youth political participation

-Laurent Jimaja, Administrative Councillor (Mayor of Grand-Saconnex) & Co-President at FAANG – Addressed structural inequality and systemic barriers faced by Afro-descendant communities

-Candace NKOTH BISSECK, President of APNS – Shared how professional networks support career advancement & foster dialogue on inequality and discrimination

🤝 Co-organized by PHENOMENAL WOMEN GLOBAL, African Professionals Network Switzerland (APNS), & Fédération des Associations d'Afrodescendant.e.x.s et de Noir.e.x.s de Genève (FAANG)

🥂 A cocktail reception followed, offering space for informal networking, community building, & continued dialogue. Guests enjoyed African cuisine prepared by MikatéB MIKTB, alongside exceptional African art pieces showcased by Galerie Lamine Fall, adding a strong cultural dimension to the evening.

🙏 We extend our appreciation to all speakers. Special thanks to H.E. Amb. Muhammadou M.O. Kah for his engagement, & to H.E. Martin Kimani for his insightful keynote. We were honored by the presence of several ambassadors, including the ambassadors of South Africa, Djibouti, and South Sudan, whose attendance underscored the importance of international solidarity in advancing the DDPA.
