The Friends of Regent's Park are running a kite-flying festival on Primrose Hill on the 18th of October. Details below:

"Let’s go fly a kite up to the highest height,
Let’s go fly a kite and send it soaring”.

We are all familiar with the words of this song from the film Mary Poppins. According to BBC Weather, the best months for wind in this country are April and October, so let us take advantage of this to come to Primrose Hill to have fun flying kites.

The event will start with a demonstration of kite flying by experts from the London Kite Team, following which these experts will be available to instruct you to help you fly your kite to the “highest heights”.

For those people who do not have their own kites, there will be a selection of different priced kites to buy and take home afterwards.

“Oh, let's go fly a “kite!”

Bring a picnic, although food and drink will be available to purchase from the Primrose Hill Café.

Places unlimited. All welcome - Friends and p***c.

VENUE: In front of the Primrose Hill Café

COST: Free

No booking required. Just come, with or without your children or grandchildren.

📜 Chag Sameach to everyone across St John's Wood and Lisson Grove marking Sh'mini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. This is the weekend the annual cycle of Torah readings ends and starts over, and the dancing that goes with it is the happiest sound of the year in this part of Westminster. Chag sameach.

🗳️ A reminder that Budget Choices closes at 5pm today.

The survey runs through six areas, from adult social care and children's services to libraries and community groups, asking how important each is and whether more council tax would be justified to sustain it.

Across St John's Wood and Lisson Grove the priorities differ, which is exactly why both halves of the ward should answer.

📋 Three days left to tell the council what you actually want protected, whether you are up by Boundary Road or down in Lisson Grove.

Budget Choices closes on 30 September. Westminster's funding is set to fall by almost half, which means genuine decisions about which services carry on, and this survey is how residents get into those decisions rather than hearing about them afterwards.

It came up earlier this month when the council and St John Ambulance held a resilience day over at Paddington, fire officers running preparedness alongside first aid sessions.

From the Regent's Park fringe to St John's Wood High Street, five minutes each, and it counts.

🚲 Dr Bike is setting up on Tollgate Gardens this morning.

The council's mobile recycling event runs from 10am to 4pm at Tollgate Gardens Community Centre, NW6 5SG, and the mechanics are there for all of it. A free check-up: brakes adjusted, tyres pumped back up, and a straight answer on whether anything bigger is worth repairing. They have put 117 bikes back on the road at these events so far this year.

While you are there, the recycling side takes clothes, books, toys, small electricals, homeware, household batteries, lightbulbs and printer cartridges with no limit on quantity. Furniture, white goods, large electricals and mattresses are capped at five items.

Anything bulky arriving by car needs booking first, on 020 3991 6228, option 4, and you will need proof of address.

No builders' waste, nothing hazardous.

🎙️ From Abbey Road Studios to Lord's, by way of the most photographed zebra crossing on earth.

Festus Akinbusoye made his maiden speech at Full Council on 16 September, as the new councillor for Abbey Road. The mother of recording studios, the mother of cricket grounds and the mother of zebra crossings, all within a few streets of one another.

A former police and crime commissioner, he gave the chamber his verdict on the change of pace: no Tasers, no police dogs, and no council vehicles going nee-na everywhere.

Welcome, Festus.

🏆 Who around here gets everybody else moving?

The council's ActiveWestminster Awards are open for nominations, and that is precisely the question they ask. Coaches, volunteers, club secretaries, the ones who arrive first and put the equipment out.

Nine categories this year, among them the Club or Coach award, and Unsung Hero.

Our local councillors would be pleased to see a name from St John's Wood or Lisson Grove go in, and there is no shortage: the junior clubs, the groups that meet in Regent's Park, the people who have held all of it together for years without a word about it.

Last chance is midnight on Monday 28 September.

St John's Wood High Street is not wide, and a hire bike left across it makes that point quickly.

Reported to Full Council on 16 September: close to 4,500 fines levied on the hire companies since April, where the year before produced barely 1,200, and each of the four operators called in over fleet management.

Our local councillors have raised pavement obstruction here more than once, and the honest position is that enforcement on its own will not settle it.

What helps is reporting: westm.news/r, under a minute, and the council picks it up.

Yom Kippur begins at sundown this evening.

For a great many families across St John's Wood and the streets around Abbey Road, tonight starts the most solemn day of the year: twenty five hours of fasting, reflection, and putting things right with the people around you.

Our local councillors, and everyone behind this page, wish you a meaningful fast and an easy one.

G'mar chatima tova.

Something to do with the children this afternoon that costs nothing?

Sunday Streets is running at the Lisson Grove end of Church Street until two, one of the London Cycling Festival dates. Free Dr Bike maintenance, a preloved bike market from Westminster Wheels, cycle skills sessions, cargo bikes to try, with stalls, food and music running alongside.

It is not often that Lisson Grove is the part of the patch everyone else is heading towards. Today it is, and it costs nothing to join them.

Church Street, until 2pm. Walkable from Lisson Grove, a short ride from St John's Wood.
