The Worshipful Company of Woolmen

The Worshipful Company of Woolmen The Worshipful Company of Woolmen is one of the oldest of the Livery Companies of the City of London.

Our Company grew out of the ancient guild which regulated the wool trade. The first record of its existence was when it was fined by King Henry II for operating without his license. This was in 1180 so it is safe to say that we are well over eight hundred years old – somewhat older than the office of Lord Mayor itself!

We were delighted to witness the re-installation of the Master at the Worshipful Company of Woolmen at St. Vedast-alias-Foster last week.

Following unforeseen circumstances, the Court ensured continuity of leadership and we are incredibly grateful for the continued service, experience and steady guidance that will shape the year ahead.

Our thoughts are with those affected, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.

Spring on the move 🐑🌿

Flocks returning to fresh pasture, lambs at heel, and the season turning once again.

Moments like this sit at the very heart of British wool — a natural fibre shaped by landscape, tradition, and time.

Signing of the Armed Forces Covenant 🇬🇧

At the Alms Court in York, the Master signed the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of the Worshipful Company of Woolmen, committing the Company to support the Armed Forces community wherever possible.

The Covenant was countersigned by the Commanding Officers of the Red Arrows and the Queen’s Own Yeomanry — both proud affiliated units of the Woolmen.

The initiative was masterminded by Liveryman Stella Ray. Our sincere thanks to Stella for her dedication in making this happen. Stella has also taken on the role of the Woolmen’s Military Liaison Officer.

Today we celebrate the Women of the Woolmen (WoW) – a group of women connected through the Worshipful Company of Woolmen who share friendship, fellowship and a love of wool.

WoW brings together women from many different backgrounds who enjoy being part of the Woolmen community and supporting one another along the way.

Here are some of the group bringing a little sparkle to a recent dinner. 👑

Happy International Women’s Day to all the women who are part of the Woolmen family. The wool industry is full of inspiring women doing extraordinary work.

Woolman Alms Court dinner was held this year in the breathtaking surroundings of Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, one of York’s most historic architectural gems.

Steeped in over 650 years of history, this stunning medieval timber-framed hall dates back to 1357 and remains one of the finest surviving guild halls in Britain.

Its Great Hall — with soaring oak beams held together with wooden pegs — is the largest timber-framed space in the UK still used for its original purpose, giving us a real sense of what grand London livery spaces would have felt like before the Great Fire

🎄 Festival of Lessons and Carols at All Hallows by-the-Tower 🎶

Earlier this month, members of the Worshipful Company of Woolmen gathered at the historic All Hallows by-the-Tower for our annual Festival of Lessons and Carols, held alongside the Worshipful Company of Watermen & Lightermen and the Worshipful Company of Bakers.

The service was beautifully led, with lessons read by the Master and Woolman Bridie Cunningham, and accompanied by glorious music in this remarkable setting by the Tower of London. It was a reflective and uplifting way to mark the season, bringing together liverymen, freemen, family and friends.

Following the service, Woolmen adjourned to Watermen’s Hall for drinks and supper, continuing the fellowship and festive spirit.

With thanks to all involved in organising such a memorable evening — and to everyone who joined us to celebrate tradition, community and the start of the Christmas season.
