On the 15th anniversary of the end of the war in Iraq, a Warrior Infantry Fighting Vehicle is on display outside the National Army Museum. Recently decommissioned after more than 40 years of Army service, the vehicle has been gifted to the Museum by the British Army.
Research by Army experts has confirmed this Warrior was present during operations in Iraq in 2004 and was almost certainly the vehicle in which then-Private Johnson Beharry earned the Victoria Cross for two separate acts of bravery under sustained enemy attack. In a remarkable reunion, WO1 Johnson Beharry VC came face to face with the vehicle for the first time since the actions for which he received Britain’s highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy.

TNCMC is saddened to hear that RAF veteran and Windrush-generation hero Gilbert Clarke has recently passed away.

Born in Montego Bay, Jamaica, he was determined to serve and found a way to enlist in the Royal Air Force at just 16 by misrepresenting his age.

During World War II, he played an important role in servicing radar equipment, demonstrating his commitment to supporting the war effort during such a challenging time.

Gilbert celebrated his milestone centennial birthday in December 2025.

Known for his enduring dedication to remembrance and sharing his story, his legacy will continue to be honoured globally.

William James Gordon, VC
(19 May 1864–15 August 1922), was a Jamaican soldier in the British Army and recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for bravery in combat. He enlisted in the 1st Battalion, West India Regiment in 1885.
In 1892, during the Second Gambia Campaign, Gordon was deployed to Toniataba to counter local resistance.

On 13 March 1892, during an attack on the town, Gordon, then a lance corporal, saved Major G. O. Madden by throwing himself between the officer and hidden muskets, warning him and pushing him to safety. Gordon was shot through the lungs but survived.

His bravery earned him the Victoria Cross. Promoted to sergeant, he later attended Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
After leaving the army in 1902, he worked as a firing range warden in Kingston, Jamaica.
Gordon died of a stroke in 1922 and was buried with military honors at Up Park Camp.

His VC is displayed at the Jamaica Defence Force Museum.
