Writers know what they want to say. Good editorial work helps ensure readers understand it as intended.

That's where editorial professionals add value.

Editors and proofreaders bring an independent perspective, helping identify anything that might confuse, distract or disengage readers. They consider how writing will be received โ€“ not just what it says, but how effectively it communicates its message.

Good editorial work is about more than words โ€“ it's about how those words are understood.

Clear, confident communication sits at the heart of successful editorial work. Yet even experienced editorial professionals can find that feedback โ€“ however carefully written โ€“ is met with resistance rather than reflection.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Deborah explains:
โ€˜Every piece of feedback triggers a response in the brain. When editors understand how that response works, they can frame critique in ways that build trust, reduce defensiveness, and lead to better outcomes for everyone involved.โ€™

Communication for Editorial Professionals: Using Neuroscience to Improve Clarity and Impact is a two-part online course exploring how communication is perceived, processed and responded to โ€“ helping you strengthen professional relationships and increase the impact of your work.

Led by Deborah Hulme, founder of Minerva Inspires, the course draws on neuroscience and behavioural insight to explain how the brain processes language, critique and trust. With more than 20 yearsโ€™ experience advising organisations including Legal & General, EDF, Virgin Media and Network Rail, Deborah brings expert insight into how communication can influence understanding, openness and change.

27/05/2026

One of the biggest misconceptions about editorial work is that editors and proofreaders want to change a writerโ€™s voice. In reality, good editorial work is collaborative. Editorial professionals help strengthen clarity, structure and flow while respecting tone, intent and individuality.

The goal isnโ€™t to make every piece of writing sound the same. Itโ€™s to help each piece communicate as effectively as possible.

๐Ÿ’ฌ An attendee reflected after last yearโ€™s conference:
'Ever since attending my first CIEP conference in 2019, itโ€™s been my favourite professional event of the year. In a profession where much of our day-to-day work is quite solitary, itโ€™s really refreshing to be reminded that weโ€™re not on our own.'

One of the things attendees value most about the CIEP Conference is the opportunity to connect with others who truly understand the work they do.

Whether you join us in Birmingham or online, the conference is a chance to learn, reflect, share ideas and, most importantly, feel part of a wider editorial community.
