Pilots like Zdzisław Henneberg and Mirosław Ferić fought with everything they had for a free Poland and a free Europe, yet they never got to experience the peace they paid for with their lives.
Zdzisław Henneberg—Did not survive.
Henneberg took over command of 303 Squadron in early 1941. On April 12, 1941, during an attack on targets in occupied France, his Spitfire was damaged by anti-aircraft fire. He was forced to ditch his plane in the English Channel. Though a fellow pilot saw him swimming and reported his position, a rescue search could not locate him. He drowned at sea at the age of 29.
Mirosław Ferić — Did not survive
Ferić was a top ace who kept a meticulous personal diary that eventually became the official historical record of 303 Squadron. Tragically, on February 14, 1942, he was killed during a training flight at RAF Northolt when his Spitfire broke apart in mid-air. The intense G-forces prevented him from bailing out. He was 26 years old.
