☀️ With the sun shining in Thamesmead, it might seem tempting to go for a dip – but please don't swim in open water.

Even in a heatwave, the water is still very cold and can cause cold water shock. There might also be hidden hazards under the surface that you can't see.

To make a splash AND stay safe, join The Sharks for supervised paddlesports sessions on Southmere Lake every Tuesday and Thursday evening, and Saturday mornings from June.

If you see someone in difficulty in the water, call 999.

🎸 When Thamesmead resident Ian Tyson played in the band Pub Talk, his bandmate's daughter, Lizzy, created a poster featuring her dad and Ian playing their guitars.

Ian loved it so much he got it framed and hung it in his living room. Now, it's going to be part of the Thamesmead Tapestry.

Working with artist Marcus Orlandi, Ian recreated Lizzy's drawing as an appliqué patch, which will eventually be stitched into the tapestry alongside other patches.

And you can get involved, too! Simply choose a meaningful object from your living room and come along to one of Marcus' workshops.

The next session is 5pm-7pm this Thursday at Bow Arts Lakeside Centre.Full details and more dates here: https://www.thamesmeadnow.org.uk/whats-on/?tag=ThamesmeadTapestry

"I’ve grown up in Thamesmead. I’ve lived here since 1970. The best thing for me, coming from King’s Cross, was all the open land and big spaces. Living opposite the lake and just having the freedom to go round exploring was fantastic."

Gill Smith, who has been a Thamesmead resident for 56 years.

🐸 Schools and community groups are invited to get closer to nature at Tump 53 Nature Reserve in Thamesmead.

With the final half-term of the academic year fast approaching and the summer holidays to follow, local groups can book sessions to visit the beauty spot.

Children get the chance to explore habitats, discover wildlife and learn hands-on skills while surrounded by nature.

Whether it’s pond-dipping to see what’s living beneath the surface, building shelters to protect against the elements or safely learning how to light a fire, the activities spark curiosity and build confidence. It’s a chance for children to get muddy, ask questions and experience the natural world up close.

Applications for Thamesmead Community Fund grants of up to £3,000 close on 21 May. If you've got an idea for a cultural or community project that would benefit local people, apply here: https://www.thamesmeadnow.org.uk/news/communities/thamesmead-community-fund-open/

Here's what people who were awarded grants in the past say about the impact it had on their projects.

"The funding was really, really amazing. We were able to buy proper first aid kit and some equipment. Football goals can be very expensive! Now we get 60-80 people coming to play football every week." - Bernard Amankwah, Football For All

"The funding helped me to create a project but also to build a community, establish myself and get to know people here. All my friends that I have now in Thamesmead are because of that project." - Eva Lisa, Artist

“There was a lady who had a child with special needs. She normally doesn’t go out. We had a movie and popcorn day, and she was in tears because she said she always wanted to take her child to the cinema.” - Kafilat Iyiola, Family Fun Days

"When we started in 2016, we were a small group with big hearts. Thamesmead Community Fund gave us the opportunity to turn that into something structured, sustainable and deeply impactful." - Lara Alabi, Seniors in Touch
