"Say I go to Woolwich, I can walk along the Thames Path. When it says '10 minutes to go', it usually takes me at least half-an-hour! But it's a nice little walk. You get the aeroplanes coming over from City Airport, and you can study what's going on in the Thames while you walk."

👏 Huge congratulations to Crossness Pumping Station on securing official accreditation as a museum.

The Grade I-listed ‘cathedral on the marshes’ has been given full museum status by Arts Council England. The award means Thamesmead has a museum for the first time in its history.

📈 Thamesmead Community Fund is now open – and it's about to reach £500,000 in small grants awarded to local people and community groups.

If you've got an idea for a project that would make life better for the local community, you could get up to £3,000 to make it happen.

🍶 Get creative and make your own ceramics in the peaceful surroundings of the Tump 53 Nature Reserve this autumn.

Local artist Miyuki Kasahara is hosting a series of Ceramics in Nature sessions at the secluded beauty spot, supported by a grant from the Thamesmead Community Fund.

Miyuki said: "I really like the idea of being inspired by nature and creating ceramics at the Tump 53!"

Sessions include:

🥣 Saturday 26 September: Make a bowl
☕️ Saturday 10 October: Make a mug
🏺 Saturday 24 October: Make a decorative pot

Miyuki will then fire the pieces in a kiln, before hosting painting sessions:

🎨 Saturday 14 November: Paint your ceramics
🎨 Saturday 21 November: Paint your ceramics

Sessions are £5 each and are suitable for over-16s.

🪮 Beyond Braidz's After-School Braids Club returns to Jubilee Community Centre this evening.

Young people aged seven to 16 can practice hair-prepping, sectioning, single braids, cornrows and other styles on mannequins.

Come along for a discounted price of £5 per session thanks to support from Peabody.

"I enjoy living in Thamesmead. I recommend Thamesmead to people. I’ve been in the area for over 25 years.

"One of the things that attracted me to Thamesmead was the wooded areas. I wanted to get back to nature and it’s really amazing here. It’s great that areas like Tump 53 are being preserved so that the young ones can see what nature really looks like."

🧭 Thamesmead residents can try orienteering for free this Sunday when Dartford Orienteers return to the town.

Using a special orienteering map, club members will race against the clock and each other to make their way between checkpoints scattered across Thamesmead.

Local people are welcome to have a go – and the orienteering club will waive the entry fee for Thamesmead residents.

"There is no set route so the skill and fun come from trying to find the best way to go," explained Andrew Evans, from Dartford Orienteers. "You do not need to enter in advance – just turn up at The Nest to receive a detailed orienteering map of part of the estate."
