Drinking Arsenic: The Price Peruvian Communities Are Paying for the Energy Transition

This week, four leading Peruvian activists came to London to raise awareness about the devastating impacts of copper and zinc mining on downstream communities. They highlighted the operations of two major and expanding mines – Antamina in Ancash and Quellaveco in Moquegua – both associated with UK-linked companies. These mines are implicated in cases of arsenic and other heavy metal poisoning.

Trade in copper and zinc is set to soar as countries electrify. But human rights defenders are raising the alarm and revealing a darker side of the story. Vanessa Baird reports.

Join us at UCL on 1 December to hear perspectives from Peruvian land defenders living near a copper mine and members of Red Muqui. There will also be an exhibition on teaching strategies to support community resistance in Latin America.

The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between communities affected by Bauxite mining in Brazil, communities in Moquegua and Red Muqui in Peru, Groundlab, the London Mining Network, the University of Para in Brazil and University College London. It showcases the collaboration between Landscape Architecture students and communities affected by tailings dams and mining waste in Peru and Brazil.

“It is with a great sense of loss that we learned this week of the death of Rosemary Thorp. Rosemary has been our vice-president since the 1990s, having been one of our original sponsors from the word go in 1983. As such, Rosemary played a crucial role in providing the PSG with a sense of strategic guidance as a member of our management committee.

Rosemary’s career spanned the world of academic work with that of active political involvement. Her achievement is hard to summarise in just a few words.”
