On 29 April, as Anglo’s shareholders meet in London, London Mining Network and Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) will host the UK launch of two new reports examining Anglo’s impacts in Southern Africa and Peru.

The event will feature the launch of a report by Red Muqui on the impacts of the Quellaveco mine in Moquegua, Peru, including water diversion, environmental risks, and community concerns. A second report, Anglo American’s Accountability Deficit, explores the company’s long-term legacy in Southern Africa and the ongoing demands for reparations and justice.

The first round of Peru's presidential elections took place yesterday. A former minister, a TV presenter and a political heiress are among 35 candidates vying to become Peru's ninth president in just 10 years. But the results are delayed as tens of thousands of people are given a one-day voting extension.
Amidst uncertainty and accusations of fraud, we will attempt to unravel what comes next for Peru's future.

It’s been another pivotal week in the unfolding story of Peru’s embattled presidency and Congress’s efforts to assert control. We saw the censure of José Jerí, followed a day later by the appointment of his controversial replacement, José María Balcázar — Peru’s eighth president in ten years. Although from the left, Balcázar secured backing from right-wing parties seeking tactical advantage ahead of the 12 April elections.

Drinking Arsenic: The Price Peruvian Communities Are Paying for the Energy Transition

This week, four leading Peruvian activists came to London to raise awareness about the devastating impacts of copper and zinc mining on downstream communities. They highlighted the operations of two major and expanding mines – Antamina in Ancash and Quellaveco in Moquegua – both associated with UK-linked companies. These mines are implicated in cases of arsenic and other heavy metal poisoning.
