What happens when hospice care is left to chance? For some families, it means having no respite care close to home.

Jada-Lea, who has a rare genetic condition, has short breaks and expert nursing care at East Anglia's Children's Hospices - EACH. For her parents, Trevor and Michelle, it’s the only chance they get to switch off from being carers.

“In terms of respite care, there’s nothing here, and it’s a gaping black hole. The only break we get is when Jada-Lea's at Milton,” says Trevor.

Children’s hospices only receive around a third of the cost of their care from government, so the rest relies on what local communities can raise. Whether that support is there can come down to where you live.

Today, we are sharing Gena’s story.

Gena was at the heart of her family, she was full of life, warm and witty. She loved making handmade cards and tending to her garden, often enlisting her grandchildren to pull out the daisies. In 2018, her health declined and she was later cared for at Somerton House, part of Northern Ireland Hospice.

There, the staff didn’t just help reduce her pain and keep her comfortable, they also helped her to find joy in the things she loved again. On one particularly bad day, Gena was presented with a tray of flowers to make her own bouquet.

Her daughter, Gail, remembers it fondly: “Her smile went from ear to ear.”

For Gena’s final 13 weeks of life, the hospice became home to her and her family, somewhere they could sit together, laugh and make precious memories.

Care like this shouldn’t be left to chance. This , help us make sure it’s there for everyone.

This , we’re sharing stories from across the country highlighting all the amazing ways hospices care for people of all ages.

Today, we want to focus on Alison and Andrew’s story.

Alison was cared for by Highland Hospice towards the end of her life, and her husband Andrew remembers how the staff went out of their way to make everything special for her – right down to dashing out to the shops for cream and marshmallows for a hot chocolate.

Those little touches meant so much, and knowing Alison was well looked after meant that Andrew could take a step back from being her carer and simply be her husband again.

Care like this shouldn’t be left to chance. It should be there for everyone who needs it.

Susan and Earl have been opening their garden for the National Garden Scheme since 1996. But they never thought that they would end up benefiting from one of the very services that their open gardens helps fund: hospice care.

Susan's brother, Brian, was cared for at the end of his life by his local hospice - and Susan says that she saw first-hand how brilliant that care was. In fact, it makes it all the more poignant that a portion of the money raised at her open gardens goes to Hospice UK, who promote and protect hospice care for all.

Thank you to everyone at the National Garden Scheme - including all the garden owners, like Susan and Earl - for everything you do to support hospice care.

Yesterday, we were delighted to welcome Dr Richard Claxton, the National Garden Scheme Durham County team, and local National Garden Scheme garden owners to St Cuthbert's Hospice in Durham to celebrate 30 years of the National Garden Scheme's support for Hospice UK and hospice care across the UK.

Guests enjoyed a tour of the hospice gardens, including the Hospice UK Garden of Compassion, which was relocated to St Cuthbert's following its debut at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025.

We also premiered our special 30th anniversary partnership film, featuring CEOs of both Hospice UK and the National Garden Scheme, reflecting on the extraordinary impact of this longstanding partnership.

Since 1996, the National Garden Scheme has donated more than £8.4 million to Hospice UK, helping us fight for hospice care for all, for now, forever. We simply would not be the charity we are today without their support.

A huge thank you to the National Garden Scheme, its volunteers, garden owners, and everyone who has contributed to the success of this remarkable partnership over the last three decades.
