We wish our Friends a Happy New Year.

2025 starts with some very sad news. Susan Gilbert, until recently the Friends' Honorary General Secretary, died in hospital on 30th December. As many Friends will know, Susan had been facing some health issues in recent months, but the news of her passing nonetheless came as a shock.

As Hon General Secretary since 2011, Susan performed the usual secretarial jobs of office administrator, including all the routine communications paperwork and taking minutes of management meetings. But Susan being Susan, she did so much more as well. She initially ran the programme of visits for Friends, performed the "meet and greet" role at Friends' meetings, organised cheques to pay volunteers' expenses and took the lead role at the Friends' recruitment desk at Acton Depot Open Weekends. Susan voluntarily stepped down from these roles and her position as a Trustee last summer, when her health issues were still limiting her mobility; but she was looking forward to a continuing involvement with the Friends, as and when she felt able. Sadly, this was not to be.

In addition to her voluntary work with the Friends, Susan also gave freely of her time to other organisations, including the Railway Study Association, the TfL Industrial and Social History Group and a retired Underground Managers Luncheon Group.

We will all miss Susan greatly as a friend and a Friend; but she will long remain in our memories.
