"I want to support my children to keep them healthy. I want to teach them how to play."

These simple words from Abura Silvano, a father who fled South Sudan with his wife and nine children and is currently in a refugee camp, reveal something profound about fatherhood during displacement.

When everything you own fits into a single vehicle and you're searching for safety in an unfamiliar place, the responsibilities of being a father don't disappear - they become more urgent.

While Abura navigates finding shelter, securing food, and helping his children adjust to their new reality, his deepest hopes remain beautifully human: keeping his children healthy and teaching them to play.

For fathers living as refugees across Europe, daily survival often overshadows these fundamental desires. Yet these moments of connection, joy, and childhood are exactly what every parent dreams of providing.

It's easy to believe the worst about people when that's the narrative being pushed online, but the reality on the ground looks completely different.

shares how first-hand experience changes everything - from the immigrant nurses who cared for his grandad in his final days, to his own grandparents who came from Barbados to help rebuild the country, to the local charities quietly supporting their neighbours.

The people keeping society running and showing true kindness aren't a political debate. They are healthcare workers, neighbours, and family , including the millions of people living as refugees who contribute to our communities every day.

As Lucas notes, it's hard to pretend people aren't good once you've seen it with your own eyes.
