Remembering Daniel De-Gale 🙏🏾🤍

Daniel De-Gale was born in London in 1987 and diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of six. After a six-year search for a suitable donor, he received a life-saving stem cell transplant from American donor Doreene Carney.

Following his transplant, Daniel went on to achieve 12 GCSEs (grades A–C), three A-levels and pursue studies in sports physiotherapy at university. He made history as the first Black person in the UK to receive a stem cell transplant from an unrelated donor.

Sadly, Daniel passed away on 8 October 2008 due to complications from multiple organ failure.

His experience inspired his family to establish the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT), raising awareness of the urgent need for stem cell, blood and organ donors within Black and minority ethnic communities.

Daniel’s legacy lives on through the life-saving work of ACLT. 🤍

From working on the ramp to flying the plane 🇯🇲✈️ What an inspiring journey!

This Jamaican woman went from working as a ramp agent to achieving her dream of becoming an airline pilot. Getting there required sacrifice, discipline, and giving up some of the fun and experiences many people enjoy in their 20s. She also credits her support system for encouraging her and helping her stay focused along the way. ❤️

Her story is a powerful reminder: Never give up on your dreams. Stay focused, keep working, and don’t let what you’re missing today distract you from where you’re trying to go. Your time will come.

The Black British Book Festival has announced that Booker Prize-winning author Bernardine Evaristo and pioneering publisher, editor and writer Margaret Busby have been appointed Patrons of the festival. ✨✨✨✨✨

Their appointment marks a significant moment for BBBF as it continues to grow beyond its flagship annual festival into a year-round organisation creating opportunities for Black writers and increasing access to Black-authored books.

Reflecting on her appointment as Patron, Evaristo commented:

“At a time when we are thinking deeply about our literary past, present and future, it is especially important to support organisations that are not only celebrating what has been achieved, but creating opportunities for the generations still to come.

Busby added:

“The literary landscape has changed enormously over the decades, but creating meaningful opportunities, widening access and ensuring that a diversity of voices can be published, read and valued remains essential.

“BBBF is contributing to that work in exciting and ambitious ways, both through its annual festival and its year-round programmes.

The appointments come as BBBF prepares for the sixth edition of its flagship festival at the Barbican Centre in London this Sunday October 4, 2026.
