Child Accident Prevention Trust We give free child safety advice to parents and carers, support professionals working with children and families. Many of these accidents can be prevented.

Our vision is a world where children lead active, healthy lives, safe from serious injury. The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) is the UK’s leading charity working to reduce the number of children and young people killed, disabled or seriously injured in accidents. We exist because accidents are a leading cause of death and serious injury for children and young people.

We often talk about small children drowning. But any child can drown - even strong swimmers.

They may overestimate how strong a swimmer they are or underestimate risks in the sea or open water, like lakes, rivers and reservoirs.

Please talk to your older children about water safety:

💧Teach them to choose safe places to swim like public pools and beaches with lifeguards

💧Explain the risk of swimming in open water. Even on a very warm day, open water can be cold enough to cause cold water shock. This physical reaction makes it hard to control breathing or to swim, causing swimmers to panic.

💧Talk to them about what to do if this ever happens. And teach them how to float.

Do you know the 50p rule? If your child has a burn bigger than this you need to get medical advice right away.

Babies, toddlers and preschoolers have delicate skin that burns easily. Knowing what to do if your child suffers a burn can mean the difference between lifelong scarring and a child who heals well.

Remember COOL, CALL, COVER

COOL the burn for at least 20 minutes with cool (not cold) running water
CALL for help for any burn bigger than a 50p coin.
COVER the burn loosely with cling film or a clean, non-fluffy dressing or cloth.

Q. If a fire breaks out at night, will you smell the smoke and wake up?

A. No. The poisonous fumes will send you and your family deeper into sleep. You may never wake up.

That’s why working smoke alarms are so important.

When was the last time you tested yours?

Get into the habit of testing it regularly to keep your family safe.

It only takes a second.

A quick distraction.
An open window.
A curious child.

Falls from windows can be devastating - but they’re preventable.

✔️Keep low furniture away from open windows so that children can’t climb up
✔️Install window restrictors or locks if you can
✔️If your window won’t lock or you need to open the window wider, don’t leave young children alone in the room

Let’s make homes safer together.

With half term approaching for some, are you planning to explore your local area?

Whether you’re walking, cycling or scooting, it’s a fab activity that doesn’t have to cost a thing. Plus, you can use this time to teach your children about road safety too.

⭐ Encourage small children to hold your hand and keep on the pavement out of harm's way. ⭐Remember they may easily get distracted and run into the road.
⭐Where possible keep children on the inside of the pavement away from traffic.
⭐ Talk about what you can see and hear.
⭐Ask questions to help them understand simple ideas like ‘fast’ and ‘slow’, as well as where the pavement ends and the road begins.
⭐Remember, children will copy what you do, so try to avoid stepping into the road without making it obvious you’re checking it’s safe to cross first.

You'll find more road safety tips on our website, plus, some great activity sheets for children: https://capt.org.uk/csw-road-safety/
