Looking for ways to celebrate the Ocean this World Ocean Month?💙 We’ve got you.

Here are three science-backed and free learning resources. Perfect for learning about the Ocean!👇

1.🌊 Introduction to the Ocean: Explore the ecosystem keeping us all alive, from the coastlines to the deep

2.🗣️ How to be an Ocean storyteller: Explore climate media coverage, evaluate different communication formats and learn how to fact-check information

3.🐻‍❄️ Adaptations in the Polar environment: Learn how polar animals adapt to survive extreme environments like the Arctic and Antarctica

1. 🐬 Orcas (also known as killer whales) are actually dolphins. They are the largest within the dolphin family: Orcas can weigh up to 6 tons.

2. 🍽️ Their hunting skills make them apex predators (this means = they’re on top of their food chain)

3. 🤝 Orcas often hunt in groups, called pods, and their hunting techniques are passed down through generations.

4. 🐟 Their diet depends on the region of our Ocean they live in, and the pod’s habits, but orcas will eat seals, whales, penguins, birds (yes, birds!) and fish.

5. 😴 Orcas’ snoozing habits are worth mentioning, too: Only half of their brain sleeps at a time. 🧠 The other brain hemisphere stays awake to look out for dangers.

Celebrate World Ocean Day 💙 with these facts 🌊

The theme for World Ocean Day (8 June) this year is: Reimagine your relationship with the Ocean.

The Ocean is keeping us all alive. Yes, even if we live far from it! The Ocean provides over +50% of our oxygen and is the true lungs of our Earth.

Think 🐳 about all the creatures, from the tiny planktons to the mighty blue whale, working together, creating an ecosystem that supports all life on Earth.

Notice how connected we are to the Ocean: every drop of water (including what’s inside of you) has cycled through the Ocean at some point.💧

Consider how the things happening in one part of the Ocean impact the whole. The Ocean is ONE, connected ecosystem. 🙌 This also means = our actions, no matter how big or small, can also make a positive difference.

This World Ocean Day, imagine how you can look after this vital life-support system, through your everyday actions. Imagine, then action. 💙

Another day, another fun Ocean fact. Turns out: We're not the only ones who like to get comfy before bed. Parrotfish use *mucus* sleeping bags to protect themselves when they sleep😴

How the Ocean makes you happier: Explained💙👇

Swimming in the Ocean = happiness hack🥹

And, there’s actually science behind how being in nature is good for you:

1.💙 Negative ions form naturally in nature

2.🙌 These ions have positive effects: they can increase oxygen flow to the brain, boost alertness and improve your mood.

3.💧 They’re created when water collides with itself. Think waterfalls, plants growing, Ocean waves

So, if you ask me for advice, I’m just going to tell you: go to the Ocean🌊

Another day, another fun Ocean fact. Gannets are extraordinary marine birds 🐦 that dive head-first into the Ocean at speeds of 100 km/h (60 mph) to catch fish. 🤯

They often dive as deep as 20m (66 ft). ⬇️

Gannets use their wings to swim (!!) deeper into the Ocean, to hunt for small shoaling fish. 🐟 Their wingspan can reach up to 2 m (6.5 ft) (AKA: taller than the average human male 🤭).

Another day, another fun Ocean fact. 🐙 Most octopus species live on the Ocean floor.

*But not this one!*

The football octopus (⚽️ what a name!!!) lives in the water column, and it’s one of the few cephalopod species with a swim bladder to help it manage buoyancy.

Females of the football octopus grow up to 80 cm (~31 in) in overall length, BUT males are tiny, only growing about 3 cm (~1 in) in mantle length. During mating, males detach their specialised reproductive arm and pass it to the females🤯

AND, females give birth to *live young* !!!

2.🦦 A group of resting sea otters is called a ‘raft’

3.🥹 Sea otter moms wrap their pups in kelp, too

4.👀 Sea otters have built-in pockets

5.💙 Sea otters = keystone species

6.🤯 Sometimes sea otters’ bones turn purple

7.🏆 Sea otters have the densest fur in the world

A bonus fact for the sea otter fan club: Sea otters are *much* larger than river otters! 🌊 Sea otters can grow up to 1.2m / 4 ft in length!

Another day, another fun Ocean fact. During courtship, manta rays dance. 🥹

Female mantas will lead males in a high-energy dance. Sometimes, up to 30 males join in!! 📹

Before mating, male manta rays follow the female around the reef in a dance. Eventually, most males get tired trying to keep up with her… the most dedicated of them wins the dance! 🏆 And her heart. 🥹
