Tonight, just when we were getting ready to close the doors of our Canning Town clinic for the night…

A young schoolgirl and her mum walked in carrying a small cardboard box.

They had been on their way home in Forest Gate when they spotted it, sitting all alone in an alleyway.

It was taped shut.

Something didn’t feel right. They knew they couldn’t just walk past.

So they stopped, opened the box and discovered a tiny little kitten inside.

She’s roughly 8 weeks old, she was completely alone.

There weren’t even any holes in the box.

We cannot put into words how cruel that is. To shut an 8-week-old kitten inside a taped-up cardboard box, with no way of getting out and not even able to breathe properly and leave her alone in an alleyway.

Whoever left her there cannot have expected her to survive.

Thankfully, this mum and daughter found her before it was too late and brought her straight to us.

We’ve named her Ruby. ❤️

She has only just arrived at CHAT, so for now our team will be keeping a close eye on her, giving her a proper check over and making sure she has everything a little kitten of her age needs.

It is heartbreaking to think about what could have happened if that box had gone unnoticed.

Ruby was discarded like she didn’t matter.

But from the moment she came through our clinic doors, she mattered to us. 🐾❤️

🚨 WE DESPERATELY NEED KITTEN FOOD AT LEWISHAM 🚨

Behind the scenes, our rescue team has been incredibly busy with another TWO huge rescue cases. We haven’t had a chance to tell you their full stories yet, but right now we urgently need your help to feed them.

This week, we rescued three mums and their eight tiny kittens from awful conditions in a home with a large number of cats. This came straight after another rescue involving 27 cats, including two mums and their kittens. We also have two further litters in foster care who are being weaned onto solid food.

That’s a lot of little bowls to keep filling, several times a day!

Getting them safely through our doors is just the beginning. There are hungry mums to feed, kittens learning to eat, bedding to wash, litter trays to clean and little ones who need extra help and attention. The time, care and resources needed to look after so many cats and kittens are enormous, and our teams and foster carers are working so hard to give each one what they need.

Our food supplies simply aren’t keeping up, and we desperately need:

🐱 Royal Canin Babycat dry food

Here’s a little feel-good Friday story for you! 🐾

Imagine finding a mum and six tiny kittens in your garden and spending weeks ringing around rescues trying to find them help. That’s exactly what happened to a man in Peckham.

Sadly, every rescue he contacted was unable to take them. Just like us, rescues everywhere are desperately overcrowded and their resources are stretched to the limit.

While he waited, he made them a little makeshift den to protect mum and her babies from foxes, and kept feeding mum himself. ❤️

By the time we heard about the Peckham Seven, the kittens were already a few weeks old. We knew we had to help and they're now safely in the care of one of our wonderful fosterers in Lewisham.

They're being weighed every day, closely monitored and, with a little help from their fosterer, mum is getting everything she needs to look after her six boys. 🐾

Mum and her six boys are all doing well and will remain safely in our care while the kittens continue to grow. They will all be neutered and when they’re ready, will go on to find loving homes of their own.

Of course, six boys from Peckham needed some very special names… 😂

Del Boy, Rodney, Uncle Albert, Boycie, Trigger and Mickey Pearce, with mum Cassandra keeping them all in line.

Meet Fairy, our October Cover Star of the Month. 🧚‍♀️ ❤️
Fairy is roughly three months old and was seen trapped in a double fence in Tower Hamlets, with one of her back paws caught. A member of the public managed to get her free, but as they did, her badly injured paw was torn away.

It’s just awful to think about this tiny kitten, already lost, terrified and in pain, and then this happening to her. Thankfully, the person who freed her called our Canning Town branch for help and Simon, one of our rescuers, went straight out to get her.

The damage was so severe that our vets had no choice but to amputate her whole leg. It was a huge operation for such a tiny kitten and a very serious thing for any cat to go through, but it was the right thing to do for Fairy and gave her the best chance of being mobile, comfortable and pain free.

Thankfully, Fairy is young, recovering brilliantly and should adapt incredibly well to life on three legs. We regularly reassure owners that, when a cat has suffered serious or complicated injuries to a leg, amputation can actually give them the best chance of a happy, comfortable life.

The operation alone cost £755. Her hospital care, medication and pain relief have added another £350 so we’re already over £1,000 in veterinary costs for this little girl.

And Fairy is just one of the cats our rescuers are going out to help every day. When that call comes in, if a cat needs us and we can help, we go!. And thanks to the wonderful support we have from we don’t stop to think about whether we can afford it first.

As many of you know, we have our own vets, which helps us keep costs as low as possible. But even a cat who needs no extra treatment costs us around £250 for neutering, vaccinations, microchipping, flea, worm treatment and their care with us before they can be rehomed. That’s before any surgery, investigations, medication, or unexpected veterinary care.

Since Fairy came into our care, we’ve already helped many more cats in need. And right now, we’re dealing with one of the most upsetting situations we’ve seen in a while, a hoarding case involving cats who desperately need our help. We’ll be sharing more about what we’ve been upto over the coming days.

As it’s payday for many of you, we’re asking our wonderful cat community to help us with Fairy’s veterinary bill. If you can spare £2, £10, £25 or whatever you’re able to give, it will help us cover the cost of the care she’s needed and, just as importantly, help us be ready for the next cat who needs us.

🐾 Happy Adoption Tuesday 🐾

“I thought you might like a little update on Molly (originally Nancy) who was my foster fail back in 2012. She was found on the side of a road after an RTA and had to have a front leg amputation. But this has never stopped her from living life to the full. We moved up to the Peak District in 2014 and she now has a big garden to explore where she is safely fenced in and has all her own favourite spots.

She was so scared when she first arrived that she hid in the back of a cupboard for 2 days. But over the years she has developed a wonderful cheeky little personality, taking any opportunity to steal some human water and demanding her own chair in the garden. She has her little routines, sitting between us in her spot on the sofa and coming to bed in the morning for cuddles and purrs. She headbutts us or pats us with her front paw to get our attention if there is anything she needs.

I was warned when I adopted Molly that she might not have a full expectancy because of her amputation, but she is 15 now and doing really well. She has developed a bit of arthritis over the last couple of years which is successfully managed with medication and acupuncture, which she really enjoys. We call the acupuncture her spa days!

Over the years, Molly has leant to recognise the sound of the car approaching and greets one or both of us by the front door when we come home. She is our family and has absolutely stolen our hearts.

She is also testimony to how tripod cats thrive with a few adaptations. I would urge anyone considering adopting to give a tripod cat a chance or if your cat is in the position of needing an amputation to be encouraged that they can still live a full life.” - Amy

Yes, that is right… you are seeing a rabbit! 🐰

We know, we’re primarily a cat rescue. But very occasionally, when there really is nowhere else for an animal to go, we do what we can to help. That’s how Nibbles came to be with us at Celia Hammond Animal Trust in Lewisham.

Nibbles has been in our care for far too long and really, really needs a home.💔

Nibbles is a 4-year-old neutered male rabbit who is friendly, sweet and just a little bit sassy. He loves a stroke and a bit of brushing, but he’s not shy about telling you when he’s had enough! The animal care team say he’s a big fan of his food and absolutely loves his veggies. 🥕🥬

He came to us after his owners were moving and could no longer keep him. He has been used to living as a house rabbit and has previously lived alongside cats.

Earlier this year, Nibbles went into foster with the hope that he could stay permanently and be bonded with the foster carer’s neutered female rabbit. His foster carers spent two months trying to make the pairing work, but unfortunately, it became clear that the female rabbit simply didn’t accept Nibbles and was becoming unhappy. So this experience doesn’t mean that Nibbles can’t live happily with another rabbit.

In fact, Nibbles could potentially be very happy in a home with another suitable, neutered rabbit, provided they are carefully introduced and successfully bonded. Finding him the right rabbit companion could be a wonderful outcome for him.

He is such a lovely boy with a BIG personality and deserves to be settled in a proper home where he can enjoy life, with the companionship that is right for him.

Leonard and Bernadette Finally Find Their Home 🏡

Sometimes, the cats who leave the biggest pawprints on our hearts are the ones who take the longest to find their way home. ❤️

Leonard and Bernadette came into our care at just eight weeks old. They were rescued from a back garden in the E12 area, part of a group of 11 kittens from two litters.

Sadly, one of the kittens was too weak to survive and passed away soon after they arrived. It was a heartbreaking start, but we were determined to give the remaining kittens the best chance we could.

Over time, their brothers and sisters all found homes, while Leonard and Bernadette remained with us. What began as a temporary stay became more than a year in our care.

Their journey wasn't always easy. Both struggled with ongoing stomach issues, meaning regular veterinary checks, medication, careful monitoring and a special diet. Our animal care team became very familiar with their routines, while our vets worked hard to get their stomach problems under control and keep them happy and healthy.

Through it all, they remained incredibly affectionate. Leonard is a gentle soul who adores attention and happily rolls onto his back for a belly rub, while Bernadette is a little whirlwind who rarely stops moving and always wants to be wherever people are. Together, they became a much-loved part of everyday life at our Canning Town clinic.

Then, last week, after more than a year of waiting, Leonard and Bernadette were finally adopted together!

It was the moment our team had been hoping for, but that didn't make saying goodbye any easier. Staff had watched them grow from tiny, vulnerable kittens, cared for them through difficult days and celebrated every step forward. There were certainly a few tears as they left, but they were very happy ones.

After everything they had been through, they finally had someone who saw what we had always seen in them: two loving cats who deserved the chance to grow up together in a home of their own.

We’ll keep you updated with how life is going with their furever family soon! 🐾
