ASLEF is the union for the UK's train drivers. Promoted by ASLEF, 77 St John Street, London EC1M 4NN ASLEF is Britain's trade union for train drivers.

Its 20,000 members are employed in the train operating companies, the freight companies, London Underground and some Light Rapid Transport.

98% – that's how much moving goods by rail instead of road can reduce risk by.

New research by the Parliamentary Advisory Committee on Transport Safety has found that rail freight is 78 times safer than road freight when it comes to rail-adjusted Fatal and Weighted Injury Rates.

And they found that a single freight train can remove between 75 and 129 HGV movements from our roads – reducing congestion and cutting carbon emissions.

Rail freight is the cleaner, greener, safer alternative. But the sector needs support to grow.

That starts with levelling the playing field between rail and road. Road freight has benefited from years of fuel duty freezes, while Britain's privatised rail freight sector faces uncertainty.

From periods to childbirth to menopause, the rail industry is failing women train drivers.

And by not tackling the issue of toilets, the industry is placing barriers in front of women who may wish to join the grade.

Promise broken.

Train and freight operating companies pledged to ensure that, by July 2026, every train driver would have access to a toilet within four hours of signing on for duty.

Well, it's July, and they still haven't implemented that agreement.

Many drivers are going hours without a toilet break. And freight drivers in particular have no access to toilets at all on many of their shifts.

Jobs secured throughout the supply chain.

British Steel has been renationalised. This is great news for the railways.

Without the Scunthorpe steel works, we can't make rails. No rails, no trains.

And freight trains are a huge part of the steel supply chain – transporting the raw materials to make the steel then transporting the finished product away.

Nationalisation provides greater security for rail freight companies, and helps secure jobs in our communities.
