Yesterday WRI hosted their first event at CSW70.
The discussion was a stark reminder of the complex — and often hidden — challenges faced by widows around the world.
We heard how widows’ rights are deeply connected to harmful practices and entrenched gender inequality. In some communities, widows may be forced into marriage with a deceased husband’s relative, and in extreme cases subjected to violence or punishment as a means of control. These realities are confronting, but they must be spoken about.
What came through strongly was the importance of holistic support. Widows need far more than financial assistance alone. Effective support includes:
Emotional and psychological care, including grief and mental health support
Parenting guidance to help families navigate loss together
Education and learning opportunities to rebuild confidence
Economic awareness and financial empowerment
Community connection and peer support
Wellbeing practices that support healing and resilience
The message was clear: when support recognises the emotional, social, cultural and economic barriers widows face, real empowerment becomes possible.
These conversations reinforce why raising awareness of widows’ rights matters — and why this work must continue.
