Jewish Legacy

Today is the 30th yahrzeit, in the Jewish calendar, of the late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was tragically assassinated in Tel Aviv.

Whilst much attention has focused on the later period of his life and his great striving for peace in Israel and across the Middle East, his role as Chief of Staff in the 1967 Six Day War, when Israel miraculously managed to overcome existential threats from enemies on all sides, also helped to establish him as a great figure of modern Jewish history. His remarkable speech at the Hebrew University after the war on receiving an honorary doctorate, is an important part of his legacy and a way to remember him on this yahrzeit:

Tribe returned yesterday from a meaningful and impactful trip to Poland with Year 12 and 13 students.

Throughout the week, they visited the Warsaw Ghetto and Jewish Cemetery, the Rapaport Memorial, and Majdanek, before spending a powerful Shabbat in Krakow with a magical Havdallah at Rama Shul. The group also visited Schindler’s Factory and ended with Auschwitz I and Birkenau.

Ahead of Mitzvah Day next month, Stanmore & Canons Park Synagogue brought together six communities for a multifaith gardening project in Canons Park, tidying overgrown flower beds, planting daffodils, and filling 40 wheelbarrows of weeds and 10 bags of rubbish. Joined by local leaders and volunteers of all ages, the day was a chance to put this year’s theme of ‘building bridges’ into action, fostering connection across faiths and generations.

💚 Mitzvah Day is on Sunday 23 November, reach out to your local shul to get involved or join US Chesed's Toy Drive wrapping!

Please join us in wishing former hostage, Eliya Cohen, and Nova survivor, Ziv Abud, a big Mazal Tov on their engagement! 🎉

Eliya and Ziv both endured the horrors of October 7 at the Nova Festival, where Eliya was kidnapped and held hostage by Hamas for 505 days. True to his promise, Eliya waited to propose until all the living hostages had returned home.

We pray for many more joyous celebrations to come.

On Saturday, we gathered with Chief Rabbi Mirvis and the Hostages and Missing Families Forum UK for a special Havdalah ceremony.

It was a night filled with song, dance, and reflection. Together, we celebrated the return of the living hostages, mourned those who were murdered, and prayed for the return of the hostages’ bodies.
