Why “End Immigration Detention”? What do we mean by “Border Profiteers”? What’s the alternative?

Every year the majority of people detained are released back into the community, meaning their detention has served no purpose other than to isolate and traumatise them. There is “a troubling picture of systemic failings across immigration detention that continue year after year”. There is also no statutory limit on the length of time someone can be held in detention – the UK is the only European country without such a time limit.
Private contractors like Serco and Mitie are paid millions by the UK government each year to run the UK’s detention centres. And those detention centres are notorious for their prison-like conditions, inadequate safeguards, and extremely high rates of self-harm and su***de attempts.
With alternatives available that are more humane, cost less and do far less damage, the government could choose to end the harm caused by detention and instead invest in supporting people in our communities.
