Congratulations,Kevin Davidson
The Emily Paige Short Pioneer Fund foundation just sent out its post-Covid newsletter. Full of info on our grant recipients and financial details about grants for the coming 5 years, and mapping prize winner Kevin Davidson's research on Mars. How did he do that?? If you would like a copy of the newsletter to pass on, let me know. The text follows:
The Emily Paige Short Pioneer Fund is a Covid survivor thanks to your support!
We have been silent for the entire lockdown period and it's time to update you on what is going on.
Fundraisers and Grants were impossible to carry out because our events are concerts and lectures held before live audiences, and because field studies did not happen. Our scholarship grants go to those who are studying in the field (outdoors). In most cases that means traveling to other countries. It was disappointing not to be able to give grants to deserving students, but imagine how hard it was for Birkbeck geology students to accept the Covid situation, since they had plans for their research outdoors and far from London. It was indeed frustrating, but things are looking up.
We were busy! Thanks to the successful fundraisers up until the Covid period, we were able to not only grant the Mapping Prize to Kevin Davidson for his fascinating map work on Mars (Wait! we just said there was no travel! Was Kevin on Mars? Read below to get his details on the seismic waves he detected in marsquakes.), but we also made a 5-year commitment to Birkbeck to grant £2,000 per year for students who are chosen as recipients. Applicants present their project proposals and are chosen by the department head.
An expanding Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences: Birkbeck has enlarged its department and added world class labs for students. Students take part in extensive field work both in the UK and internationally as part of their subject requirements.
As we start anew in our fundraising, we hope that you will keep in mind the work we are doing in helping students and the way we are raising funds. Our concerts and lectures are for your enjoyment while you are supporting this worthwhile and interesting endeavour.
