The UK’s dried out grass is more complex than we might think 🌱

Dormant lawns will grow back again after rain, but ecosystems don’t bounce back quite so quickly.

Drought changes what can survive in the soil and ultimately what food is available for the birds and mammals higher up the food chain.

London’s green spaces are under the weather 😓

But not all of them are created equally.

A park’s design can have a massive impact on how well it deals with adverse conditions, and how comfortable it remains for people and wildlife.

We’ll be exploring this Summer’s weather, and what it can teach us about urban green spaces, in more detail over the next few weeks 🌞

Have you ever heard of cloud pruning? ☁️

Niwaki, or cloud pruning, is a traditional Japanese topiary technique where the lower branches are stripped away to create floating ‘clouds’ of foliage 🌳

Our volunteers practiced this technique on bamboo trees in the Japanese Garden, as part of our monthly session at Peckham Rye Park on Saturday 🎋

A great day out at Barnsbury Wood on Saturday! 🌳

Our volunteers braved the hot weather to lay wood chip, protecting the ground in London’s smallest local nature reserve. 🪵

A new initiative for families in London 🏠

HOL will be running a new series of Monthly volunteering days at Barnsbury Wood - London’s smallest local nature reserve - in partnership with Islington’s Nature Conservation Team.

This is an incredible opportunity for younger people to learn about a unique space which is only open to the public for a few hours each week.
