Street Trees for Living

The Last Hurdle

Last night our citizen scientists and volunteers from GoodGym were out on Lewisham's streets in the beautiful evening sunshine, working through the Tree Health Check tree by tree — measuring, photographing and recording.

It's slow, careful work, and it's the only way we truly get a measure of which trees are healthy and which need a bit of extra care.

We had over 1000 trees to check this year and progress has been extraordinary. With over 90% of Trees Health Checks in Lewisham complete, we're on the final stretch!

Thank you to everyone who has come out so far, either individually, between walks, or as part of an event.

Beautiful badges by Custom digital embroidery - a collectable, sew-on patch to mark this year's check - to be sent out to all our 'Street Tree Living Legends'! There's still time to get yours ⚠️

Street trees need us and we need street trees more than ever!

If you notice young street trees in Lewisham looking thirsty, connect with your neighbours or report to us to find out if they need water. There are 1000+ STfL tree guardians out there in Lewisham already but right now many hands definitely make light(er) work.

Please make sure to take a look at our advice for tree care during hot and dry conditions - link in our bio 🔗.

✔️40L can feel like a lot so get together and share the load.

✔️The Thames Water hosepipe ban does not affect the watering of street trees. Still…it's surprising and very satisfying how far reused greywater can go.

✔️This little oak was leafless just two weeks ago, but amidst the heatwave it sprung back with new green growth after just two deep weekly waters!

Eva spent a July evening with an incredible group of volunteers from the who joined us to run around the area, checking on the health of over 70 recently planted street trees. One person said it was incredibly addictive (and we have to agree!). Visit our website if you'd like to sign up to be a volunteer or help out with our annual tree health check.

We’re recruiting for new trustees! We’re looking for three new people to join our board and help our charity to grow. This is a voluntary role for someone with a passion for trees, communities and experience in how voluntary organisations work. Full details can be found on our website or via our link in bio. We’d love to hear from you so please get in touch or spread the word 🙏

🌳 We loved visiting Hillier Tree Nursery last Wednesday!
A day deep in the roots of where our Lewisham Street Trees begin their journey.

☕ We kicked off the morning with pastries, hot drinks, and warm introductions from Jim Hillier and Will Innes-Taylor at Andlers Ash Farm in Hampshire.
Then it was straight into the fascinating world of tree production; from the very first stages of a tree's life through to lifting, potting-on, and everything in between.
A huge thank you to the whole Hillier team for such a generous and inspiring day. 🙏

We are so happy with our new electric cargo bike, coming soon to a street near you! This modular bike has been configured to our specific requirements, and it's capable of carrying everything we need to support tree care sessions, emergency watering and community events... so no more lugging post bashers, tree guards and heavy tools around Lewisham on the bus 🙌 Hand built in Hackney, we want to thank for designing and building such a brilliant low impact and environmentally sustainable piece of kit.
