Nigeria at 66: Justice, We Seek

“Now, we have acquired our rightful status, Nigeria now stands well built upon firm foundations,” said Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Tafawa Balewa, on October 1, 1960.

I went back to those words and asked myself: Did we ever truly build on those firm foundations?

Nigeria is 66 today. Flags fly, anthems are sung, and messages of hope are delivered. But beyond the celebrations is another Nigeria, the worker struggling with rising costs, the parent calculating what to leave out of the shopping basket, the student worried about school fees, the farmer struggling to get produce to market, and the child whose education is interrupted by insecurity.

Happy 66th Independence Anniversary, Nigeria. 🇳🇬
